And Mitch Benn! Dear god, the BBC deserve to be scrapped. Dominic Holland said a few months ago that the BBC had thrown him out for being a white male and I thought it was more because he is a white male Conservative. Look out for Andrew Neil to be replaced with Charlotte Church.

Those who live by the BBC die by the BBC

equality BBC style

Jon Holmes is one of the high points of the Now Show on R4. I can only imagine they'll replace him with talentless, tone deaf Isy Suttie or someone even worse. I haven't been able to listen to anything topical from the BBC since Brexit because I knew that they'd be unbearable. Now I don't even have to bother.

@Pcar on the St Helena 737 vs 767 issue ..I am only the messenger.

@GC I did presume there were rational reasons why St Helena doesn't have flying boats like that the sea is mostly too heavy and no sheltered harbours.
I note Maldives does have a seaplane airline
and "1934 - First flight over St Helena - made by a seaplane from HMS Dorsetshire."

@Pcar Re Madeira ..I made the comparison with Tenerife where I have lived in the north which is definitely a year round resort
Madeira on the other hand does have this 4 month winter ..you know when the storms come and wash away all the artificial beaches and lifts all the boats out the harbour (not every year same harbour)

Big oil money and all that , I exist on £10/day so in expensive countries I do campervan travel without the campervan... I do long distance walking and free camp in my hammock. So I first walked around the island ..an then cos I didn't bump into any cheap plcae to stay I alternated between 2 camping spots one at Camara Los Lobos west of Funchal and the other east at an old barn in Cancela (..it belongs to the family of the bar where I used to go to use the internet.) and other walks across the island
The 18C is the peak average the avg low is 14C so I needed 2 woolly hats for sleeping..In Jan it can drop below 10
and like the UK it's not dry so the humidity makes it feel colder.

I suggest you are misremebering the Dec 31 midnight temp
accuweather has it 18Cday 14C night ..with "Real Feel" 16C and 9C

I can say most things in Portuguese, but you know the locals have an unintelligible accent.
Do you know the Telexfree pyramid scheme that we helped to get stopped ?

SandyS I have sailed in Croatia with 3 water bombers refilling within 400 yards as they flew circuits for 30 minutes. I am not a plane spotter, but they were "smaller than a Dakota", and probably Soviet in origin. That was 10(?) years ago.

At the North East corner of Corfu, is a large natural harbour Gouvia. That had a seaplane/ flying boat landing strip marked out with buoys. I never saw anything use it in the 24 hours I was there. Operating commercial passenger craft to link various Greek Islands has long been an obvious answer to the lack of runways. Through the summer months, I would assume weather and sea conditions are very favourable apart from 36hours(?) every 5- 6 weeks. I have no idea whether it is still in operation.

Bombardier/Canadair are producing the fire bombers you describe. They have a range of about 2000km which could probably be increased for a passenger variant. I think that China recently announced plans to build a flying boat a nd perhaps someone else in the west
The Russians had their "Caspian Sea Monster" so will have some experience in building this type of aircraft.

I remember one summer holiday in Nairn watching a twin engined flying boat taking off and landing (is that the right word?) Nairn is fairly close to Lossiemouth at that time a Fleet Air Arm with I think Buccaneers the last time we were holidaying there. Nairn is also close to the Culbin Sands which is an interesting place.

As someone who remembers paying a mortgage under Mrs Thatcher and her successors with a BoE a Base Rate of over 10% and now as a pensioner hoping for a return on savings 4.5% interest on savings would be good and 4.5% on borrowings is not high.

but Shorts modified their commercial flying boat into the Sunderland,

Short Brothers, Short & Harland, Harland & Wolff - my maternal grandfather worked there as initially ship apprentice, then engineer, then aircraft engineer.

I have the engineering tools he made as an apprentice and the oak cabinet with felt lined drawers he made to store them in. His wood work on the cabinet drawers is way beyond my skills.
