Cladding a building as part of a refurbishment, is carried out for many reasons, but reduced maintenance costs is normally the first.

The opportunity to improve insulation, sound as well as heat, to reduce running costs for owners and/or occupants, then becomes very cost effective as an extra cost.

The building's appearance will be changed, so the opportunity to alter and improve it, is available.

Unclad concrete buildings do not normally suffer from the spread of fire externally. Flames normally spread from within, to the outside via windows.

Grenfell tragedy

It'll be interesting to see how that apparent "stay put" when an alarm goes off thing works out.

There are a whole raft of issues emerging from this catastrophe.

I believe Mrs Thatcher has already been blamed.

"Fears were raised that green energy concerns were prioritised ahead of safety as it emerged that cladding used to make the building more sustainable could have accelerated the fire.
...
Government ministers were warned about the fire risk of cladding as far back as 1999, the Daily Telegraph can reveal.

It was installed on the council-owned Grenfell block in 2015 as part of a £10 million refurbishment by a company which was later liquidated after a firm they were working with refused to pay out in a dispute over their work.

Tens of thousands of buildings in the UK have been fitted with cladding, it is estimated, leading to calls for an immediate review of safety. "

Grenfell Tower fire

C4 News: The cladding was to make building look nicer for rich neighbours. No mention it was Green dictated insulating cladding. Will Caroline Lucas, Clegg, Cameron, Davey etc apologise?

Other UK/World news? C4 news - nothing happened, world stopped. Another 1 hour Tory's fault grief whore fest.

@TinyCO2 The Singaporeans are building a new gas CCPP combined cycle power plant on Teeside.

Rather than a CCCP a replica of the old Soviet Union

Thanks Pcar

The latest theory is that all stars are born twins and our twin wandered off kicking the asteroid that killed the dinos off at the same time.

If (and it's a star sized if) it was true, might that solve the faint sun paradox?

...However recent cladding works to the outside may have exacerbated the fire, according to experts at the University of Edinburgh...
