@Pcar Jun 13, 2017 at 11:48 PM Re : BBC everyday sexism

BBC WS prog the Why Factor : Are you a numbers person?
10 minutes in a female 'expert' says "there is one group affected by this maths anxiety : women... it seems being more sensitive they are more quick to pick up on the anxiety of the teacher"

Typical : the first thing a sexism campaigner does is split society into 2 parts
This is wrong cos there may well be men who are super sensitive
and there may well be many women who don't have maths anxiety.
What she will end up doing is marking women maths students less harshly than male ones.

Very sad news about Grenfell tower. The recent refurbishment seems to have concentrated on energy efficiency and aesthetics and not so much on safety. The have GOT to stop cladding towers in stuff that burns!

Separate files is not a good idea for full-fare itineraries.

As a retired airline employee I was explaining the benefits and pitfalls of "free" standby air travel to a rookie.

One thing I pointed-out is never treat LHR as a transit/turn point. Register/book each segment on separate files.

One-way YYZ-LHR or LHR-YYZ $56

Round trip YYZ-LHR-YYZ $267.

The company charges me $5 per segment.

News:
Labour hypocrisy on DUP

BBC QT 9 June: Alastair Campbell: "[Conservative & DUP]...a sordid, disgraceful deal"

Labour & Hypocrisy - nouns which are natural bedfellows.

...The meeting was also attended by Ed Balls, husband of former shadow home secretary Yvette Cooper who has been critical of the Tory-DUP deal.

The email said: `Gordon is doing whatever he can to hold on to power.

`Shaun [Woodward], for his part, is working on an economic package for Northern Ireland to win support from the DUP and other parties for Labour - a package to be proposed in the Queen´s Speech ... Alastair [Campbell] has emerged as a stalwart, providing Gordon with talking points and practical ideas hour by hour.´...

I have a hypothesis that I have shared with nobody because it is not PC. My explanation for why we have certain prejudices is that our brains are hard-wired to identify a person's gender first. We do this automatically unless something prevents us. That is why androgynous people or those in drag stand out; our brains seek out clues and in so doing we focus upon them. Similarly I notice that if I see someone with a very different skin colour (from east Africa for example) I first notice their colour, not the person's gender. (The reason it's a hypothesis is that, not having discussed this, I don't know if this is my particular hang up or if it is universal*). I speculate that this sets up a dissonance and draws unnecessary attention to the person. I further speculate that this "otherness" is at the root of racial prejudice or, its opposite deliberate racial blindness. I have noticed something similar with people with facial disfigurement - the disfigurement overides immediate and automatic assignment of gender.

So I'm not surprised Stewgreen can automatically identify a woman in a football crowd, but would suspect this would not be automatic in a rugby crowd.

* I suspect it is universal and explains the common saying that "All you whites (blacks, chinese) look alike.

Agree with all except "not be automatic in a rugby crowd.". My brain subconsciously seeks out differences, out-of-place, potential threats... biker survival.

Yes, very non PC, well done. Your post is - I hope - an indicator of a beginning of return to honesty & reality by all and end of PC Speak.

.
Re: BBC R4 WH - they also had a women complaining that men swim too fast in swimming pools.

WH is peak PC we're victims of white patriarchy, but do not mention RoP, FGM etc.
