tomo,

Your Times of London quote:

"Fossil fuels don’t reduce poverty – they make it worse."

I can think of a few ways McKibbon might defend that statement, mostly by choosing a suitable definition for "worse", but there's a bit of leeway in "poverty" too.

For example, you can choose to be glad that more people are alive, or to be worried that "more people" implies a larger number of poor people. It's all about spin.

On a peripherally related point, I watched a doco (strangely compered by Red Dwarf's Chris Barrie) about a large container ship last night. Statistics were flying around but one that stuck in my mind was that the fuel consumption averaged out to 1000 mpg per ton of cargo. So you could spin against this ship by the sheer amount of fuel it burns, or for it by its tremendous fuel efficiency.

Personally I see XR as a friend. They largely stick to London where most of their support comes from. The more they irritate Londoners, the closer the revolution comes. Ditto the judges.

"The IFS calculates the Greens' proposal would take borrowing to £140bn. This would be more than 6% of national income and the highest level since 2012-2013, when borrowing rocketed following the global financial crisis.

The Green Party is in favour of remaining in the European Union, but running a budget deficit of 6% would be double the limit set out in the EU's growth and stability pact."

[That should make clear that it would be ANNUAL borrowing taken to £140Bn, to add to the existing debt. Subject to that rather glaring ambiguity, it's refreshing to see the idiocy and inconsistency in the Green Party's position here being exposed. It would be a breach not of Tory austerity, but of EU austerity requirements].

stewgreen, thanks for the debunk of the Jo Swinson/Transparency International story. It seems you have the right of it, and I'm glad I expressed reservations rather than piling in to say how shocking it is.

I think the really shocking things is how many organisations are funded by the EU to lobby the EU to make changes the EU apparently wants. What a waste of money, and what a marvellous gravy train for those involved, mostly doing non-jobs.

AK, I suspect your response to the BBC's Wales Environment correspondent point was tongue in cheek, so I'll be gentle with you! My point really was that the BBC has loads of environment correspondents already - to see one specifically employed, apparently, to report just on the environment in Wales seems OTT to say the least. The result, no doubt, will be loads of "green" PR and precious little news about the environment in Wales.

The Times of London columnist Adam McKibbon actually wrote this sentence which was published by his employer.

"Fossil fuels don’t reduce poverty – they make it worse."

This isn't a scandal.// No it isn't
Bloggers try to say it's a Gotcha, just the same as they shout "funded by big oil"

It's just guilt by association.// don't agree that that is the right word
Look if her husbands income came from say 50 % EU money it would be a Conflict of Interest story
But at this magnitude it is just mudslinging
.. It's not like the EU provides 50% of the orgs money
It can't be more than 20% and could be 6%
