I wonder what local residents were allowed to believe they might expect? Free electricity for life?
There are some schemes between Reading and Oxford on the Thames, and they are intended to be crowd funded. If they are economically viable (IF!) without subsidies, and without financiers creaming off profits, then all well and good. Others may be encouraged to follow.

Any power generation that is by design and nature "Unreliable", can be part of the mix, if a reliable alternative is available. Trialling systems in the developed world, prior to exporting the technology to the developing world seems sensible.

The BBC and Guardian have realised that Trump and BoJo are not going to play by the EU/IPCC/UN rule book.
US growth seems likely to continue, and the UK economy has not pancaked as predicted. The EU is now planning to impose further restrictions on EU economies.
The BBC is facing an Unprecedented cash flow crisis.

Innumerate, grasping entitled Welsh politicians..... looks like the default setting from where I'm sat.
I'm past fed up with the "powers xxx homes" renewable weaseling BS - a plate capacity for the turbine and a capacity factor should be the bare minimum.... - which in the case of UK hydro on average is ca. 35% as in you have to find alternative(sarc) power 4.5 days a week - which is almost a day better than windmills ....
utter BS as usual from the BBC.

I am interested in this as a sensible idea, and also in the motive for the story.
There are various products available for generating hydro electric power on a small scale, with lower rates of water flow falling small heights. These could be installed adjacent to most weirs on canals and rivers in the country. Small dams on small streams would be possible for individual landowners. As with wind and solar, they cannot be relied on to produce upto 100% of capacity
