tomo, golfCharlie, Stewgreen. My post questioned tomo's unequivocal statement that the BBC were making up the story that Trump supporters were giving Heil Trump Nazi-like salutes. As as consequence of this we have responses from you that state that Trump does not support such groups (immaterial to my criticism), that Trump distanced himself from it (ditto, interesting that he is now being criticized for the time delay in repudiating the incident), and lastly that it is inconsequential (ditto, also an odd claim since the story went viral and was covered by the media worldwide: it would be very unusual if the BBC didn't cover the story). Also note that the BBC used other broadcasters' material, it was not its own story.

Tomo has still not explained his unjustified attack on the BBC, but let's put the matter to bed.

ACK but could you hum the Belgian National Anthem?

PCar I wrote "A difficult list to compile because Belgium is stereotyped as a nation of relative nonentities". This did not mean that I found it difficult, nor that I subscribe to the stereotyping. The problem I faced was identifying Belgians that others would know, and in that I clearly failed. I chose not to include Georges Remi since he is so well known that its almost cheating to include him; Tin tin is fictional; and to identify the King responsible for atrocities in Congo you need to know his reignal number (in this case Leopold II) which you didn't give. When I wrote my post I just couldn't be bothered to look up his full name - but I knew he was a Belgian Leopold.

Yes I did expect most readers here to recognize some or most of my list - with the exception of Lemaitre (who actually was born French, but spent most of his ministry and scientific life in Belgium).

PCar. I'm surprised you didn't know most of the Belgians I listed. Only one I put in to see if anyone recognized the name or asked about it. Georges Lemaitre originated most of the big ideas incorrectly attributed to Hubble (expansion of the universe, "Hubbles" Law and Constant) and first proposed the "Big Bang" cosmological theory and thus should be far better known.

You said you had to search for famous Belgians (ie you knew of none/few). Then you're surprised when I hadn't heard of most of them? You hadn't either until you searched.

I knew of Leopold and what he did to Belgian Congo, and of Herge's TInTin which appears to be more than you.

Belgium is a miniature Yugoslavia - many states subsumed into one country constantly at war with itself.

Not a trustworthy country.

Interesting stuff about climate/ weather causing food shortages and revolution

Even quotes (favourably) Hubert Lamb who founded CRU, with honest intentions.

ACK 10:20 Trump did not ask them to do that, the BBC and others chose to make political gains from broadcasting the behaviour of others.

Obama did announce the 97% Consensus approval of Climate Science on TV, nobody forced him or tricked him. The BBC don't keep repeating it.

@Tomo People like the BBC prefer to spend time in their narrative world ..rather than the real world context/perspective

@stewgreen

The BBC is imho doing itself no favors at all giving airtime and web space to some of the wilder hysterical fantasizing of its more highly strung and thin skinned current affairs (and "comedy") folk.

The scattergun effort across the BBC to demonise Trump when they patently know so little actually about him is bound to erode yet further the trust of the audience.

The audience figures are falling.

@ACK 10:20
about as relevant as the worship of Prince Phillip by Vanuatuans....

I have read quite widely about the rise of Adolf Hitler, spoken with quite a few people who saw parts of it on several sides and have to say that whatever DT is - the characterising of him as a Nazi is abso-lootely batshit feckin bonkers.

Simply put - WTF are the BBC up to ? There are considerably more substantive issues much closer to home
