Nearly a good story

Israeli physicist Nir Shaviv wonders if Ramadan's requirement to fast during the hours of daylight would prevent moslems from surviving a polar summer.

This interesting conundrum is rather spoilt by a commenter who points out that the requirement is waived if it would affect the health of the faster.

While living in Tunisia, I asked a muslem friend a similar question concerning muslems living in Scandinavian countries. Not only is Ramadan based on the sun, the ordinary daily prayers are based on sunrise and sunset. He had to do some research and told me that they would use the astronomical tables from mid-latitude city in the same timezone.
