Biofuels are "crime against humanity"

The UN has announced that biofuels are a crime against humanity. I might also add that they're a crime against rational economic thought too.

Meanwhile, the European Union has issued a directive that biofuels should occupy more than 5% of the market in member countries. And our lords and masters in the Labour party are developing a strategy to increase their use in the UK.

Business as usual then.

Certainly the subsidised corn ethanol in the US is a crime against pretty much everything. There are some better biofuels around, but not huge quantities. Not somethign to get too excited about or set arbitrary targets for increasing their use.

Does having a new crop to sell to the west do third world peasants more harm or good? A complex question - the anti-capitalists will always say it is harmful. But they are, as you know, frequently wrong.

The missing argument is that most environmentally aware biofuel production in the UK and Europe is not going to be possible without the use of GM crops. Lets see the eco-facists ravel themselves into a knot with that one.

The thrust of what you are saying is right Joe, but you have to remember that nobody in their right mind would be growing biofuels if they weren't subsidised.
