Climate Politics as Manichean Paranoia by Roger Pielke Jr

Last night Roger Peilke Jr gave a superb talk, hosted by The Global Warming Policy Foundation, on Climate change politics. It was timely, challenging and positive. I will post the video links when they are available but you can read a Twitter version of the talk here. My cartoon notes are below and click the image for a larger version.

Russell, must be painful seeing the Greenland Ice sheet growing, Arctic Ice stable for 10 years and glaciers expanding in many locations. This is to say nothing of the obvious stairway to heaven of temperatures not following the models. You know it's all over Russell.

Martin. I wouldn't bother, all is moribund - this thread, climate scare stories, and even Russell himself.

@ Supertroll -while what you say may be true the problem is that the damage has been done - witness Jo Nova's account in South Australia below. You are not much better off in the UK with all the windmills buggering the landscape in Scotland and the anti fracking.
The scare stories are now reality in Oz

As one wag in Oz put it "they are all tunning around like headless chooks' Well it is true the power outages in South Australia have been frequent this year.

says e stiff: "Pielke Jr is the sensible, little boy who thinks we should all be nice to each other and sort out our differences. I don't agree.

It based on the untenable belief that climate 'scientists' are intelligent, honest, decent individuals pursuing the truth about the earth's long term climate. Nothing could be further from the truth. Climategate exposed them [as liars]...."

Yes, Pielke the Younger is naive about politics. If he weren't, he would not have joined the stats website 588 (fivethiryeight.com), only to get wildly attacked for his sharing his expert honesty and then forced to resign.

He spent about eight years at the alarmist NCAR as an intern and graduate assistant working on climate change effects. I don't think he can be shaken out of his True Belief of the problem of AGW effects - even though the theory has been falsified many times.

That would require deep and painful soul-searching and accepting that his youth, and career path (early and middle) has been wagered labor under a fraud.

That's too much for almost any self-respecting science-minded mind. Hence the truism (was it Max Born?) that "science advances one funeral at a time." Or rather, paradigm shifting does.

As for Pielke, Jr's talk, I couldn't get very far before his honest earnestness in face of armies of lies, hatred, and power-lust wore me out, and I gave up watching.

Excellent Orson

Pielke is the boy who cried sheep when the rest of us saw wolves.

lame to me..
an expert talking about expertise...
lame example ..lame statistics..
for instance comparing opinion on climate change or X ray...

even the anecdote of people chosing for the pilote in a plane as an illustration of expertise in democracy is lame to me..

Of course he is moderate and want to debate respect other's opinion..but...
i don't care about climate change as a polical issue, i care about the science...

The error of the speaker is to take the outer layer of the discussion as being somehow grounded in actual reality. Well tragically the bedrock of his contention is basically inaccurate - eh it's a game group - the game never shows signs of change to raise costs higher than pay.
