Diary dates, "debate" edition

The British Academy (chairman, Lord Stern) has organised an event looking at energy and environment. It's described as a "debate", but looking at the speakers I think it's fair to say that all the participants are on the same side.

Tuesday 22 September 2015, 6.30-8.00pm
The Royal Society, 6-9 Carlton House Terrace, London, SW1Y 5AG

Chaired by Nik Gowing, broadcaster

What are the challenges of meeting future demands for energy for our rapidly growing urban population? How can the growing global demands for energy be reconciled with the need to protect the planet from the impacts of climate change? What role do energy companies and international organisations have to play in meeting our needs to enable growth, whilst balancing this with the long-term sustainability of our activities?

Speakers:

Juliet Davenport, CEO, Good Energy
Professor David Newbery FBA, Director, Energy Policy Research Group, University of Cambridge
Dr Camilla Toulmin, International Institute for Environment and Development

Sheesh, surely we could save a lot of CO2 emissions by getting rid of the travel budgets of all "Energy Policy" academics, they seem to be everywhere, but what do they all do?

Mikky, they have public debates, to confirm that what they have decided is right.

By being careful with the invitations, they achieve over 97% consensus, that they are the heroes of the de-industrialization revolution.

Due to traditional power generation, their presentations are never blighted by blackouts, which would prove them wrong.

To be fair to the BBC, the interviewer did at least pose the question to the FoE moron that "You have painted yourself into an ideological corner?". That's progress.

Who actually goes and listens to something like this other than people who are paid to do so on expenses?

I suppose I might go if I suffered from low blood pressure and required some temporary relief.

Bah!

I assume this is so that in the future they will swear they've had debates, everybody agreed and can we now move on from all this silly scepticism plase!

"[..] a Trotskyist tribute act which has the culture around it which is very hostile to anyone who disagrees and it could just collapse in front of the electorate."

The description fits well enough. But the quote is, in fact, Labour MP Jon Cruddas talking about what he is afraid will happen to the Labour Party now that he has helped Corbyn onto the leadership ballot. The similarity between these peoples' words and methods, and the early 80's Labour leadership seems remarkable.

TerryS, that is an impressive CV, demonstrating how he has dedicated his time and resources to guaranteeing his financial future, at the expense of everybody elses. A true Green hero.
