Ye olde techniques - Josh 273

I thought the National Review article, posted here of course, was worth a cartoon. H/t Rick Cina in the comments for the peer-reviewed critiques of Mann's hockey sticks.

Very good Josh. Love the background, I've noticed you're working on these.

... Aren't they just........ The data just gives up in the end and the inquisition has what it wants. There's so much at 'stake'...Mostly you and me.

Ah the magic of data-mining bias: Get a hockey-stick graph from an ensemble of unremarkable proxies and rely on the innumeracy of fellow scientists and enviro-journalists. Next stop - climate shamanism.

Is that a nice red cloak he's wearing, as well as a fanatical devotion to the IPCC?

He's probably still hoping for a comfy chair.

note to keep the stick flat during the MWP, he uses a metal clamp.

Good to see some proper statistical techniques being demonstrated.
Torture the data until it confesses!

Presumably, a complementary cartoon would be "Credibility" being stretched on the rack!

Nope, even in comedy, I just can't quite see him as a 'Torquemada'

I do believe those medieval folks produced some fine illuminated manuscripts for the enjoyment, perhaps even betterment, of their fellows. I can readily picture an illuminating volume of Josh's works, a page per drawing, and with associated commentary on the facing page. He has covered so many topics that such a volume, or set of volumes, could provide a superb introduction to Climate Alarums and Machinations in Our Times. What a fine present they would make for youngsters in particular, say around the time they finish with secondary school, but it would also be a tremendous gift for any thoughtful person with a sense of humour and an interest in current affairs.

I see that over at WUWT, a commenter called 'cnxtim' suggests a 'small book' of these great works. No! Let it be large and illuminated. Howzabout it Josh?

You'll be off Mickey's Christmas card list again Josh. That's no way to make friends with the winner of a Nobel Prize.

Josh,

Your cartoon just inspired me to send this tweet a minute ago,

"..a debate where none should exist” Mann soliloquized. He's a useful foil to legions of irrepressible scientists debating right in his face

Josh! You missed a spot!

You really need the R2 (R-squared) scratched on the wall behind with a line through it.

As a long time lurker I rarely comment but the consistent high quality of Josh's cartoons is worthy of comment. Not only does Josh have great technical ability he also has a very good eye for design and has, yet again, produced a real smiler. I am sure that even members of The Establishment will find this work amusing. Well done indeed, Josh.

As an aside, when I turned over to May on Josh's 2014 calendar just now I realise I will be spending a month looking at Nigel Farage with a full pint of beer in hand celebrating UKIP's electoral success. Perhaps Josh might be seen in times to come as a prophet ?

According to the Oxford Dictionary a collage is 'a piece of art made by sticking various different materials such as photographs and pieces of paper or fabric on to a backing.´ There is no mention of torture in this process, and therefore no need to attribute this to your colleague, Josh.
