Looking at the 20th century data this paragraph from the essay matches my own inspection.

"During the first half-century, ice extent in all seasons remained essentially constant. Beginning about mid-century, the summer minimum extent began to shrink while the winter maximum remained unchanged. Starting in about 1975, the maximum, too, began to shrink. Ice extent in September 2000 (not shown in the plot) is only about 5x106 km2, the smallest ever observed in this century."

Nowadays 5×10^6 is a cold year. IIRC the current record from 2016 is closer to 3.4 ×10^6 in 2012.

I found no evidence for a cyclic pattern, but others have tried various non-linear fits and found that they give a better match than a linear regression.

I doubt there's much sales variance in SE Kent - most interested local people will know the less risky times to nip over to Belgium and few travelers in their right minds would want to stop off in Dover.

Will the BBC documentary be objective or campaigning with the usual poor BBC maths ?

I really hope it moves and inspires you, the experience of filming it certainly did for me.

I have always been curious about total shop sales of fags and booze in a Port such as Dover, and whether sales go up or down to match the performance of Customs and Excise men.
