Kim Darroch is a rude and aggressive person, who is not pleasant at all to his subordinates. He rose to prominence within the FCO under New Labour at a time when right wing, pro-Israel foreign policy views and support for the Iraq War were important assets to career progress, as was the adoption of a strange “laddish” culture led from No. 10 by Alastair Campbell, involving swearing, football shirts and pretending to be working class (Darroch was privately educated). Macho management was suddenly the thing.

At a time when news management was the be all and end all for the Blair administration, Darroch was in charge of the FCO’s Media Department. I remember being astonished when, down the telephone, he called me “fucking stupid” for disagreeing with him on some minor policy matter. I had simply never come across that kind of aggression in the FCO before. People who worked directly for him had to put up with this kind of thing all the time.

Most senior ambassadors used to have interests like Chinese literature and Shostakovitch. Darroch’s are squash and sailing. He is a bull of a man. In my view, the most likely source of the leaks is a former subordinate taking revenge for years of bullying, or a present one trying to get rid of an unpleasant boss.

in other words Darroch is a dickhead h/t One of his ex colleagues

Not single-use laminated cards, surely!
Jul 9, 2019 at 8:00 PM | M Courtney

I certainly hope not! A lot of electricity goes into the production and lamination of heat sensitive plastics intended to be durable. The Far East already has enough plastic dumped into it, that had been carefully cleaned and separated for recycling.

"There are ALWAYS lots of midges in Scotland from late June, through July and August, and sometimes into September and even October. This strikes me as another puff piece.
Jul 9, 2019 at 7:19 PM | Mark Hodgson"

It strikes me as a propaganda piece, intended to keep Global Warming in the BBC's News coverage, despite the lack of evidence.

"They attacked because they thought Thatcher would crumble.

Withdrawal of Endurance was taken as a signal by Galtieri that Britain didn't care for the Falklands.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Endurance_(1967)

Lord Carrington admitted his mistake in assessing the information supplied to him, that he then relayed to Thatcher. He resigned.

Two leaders in need of a popularity boost clashed. Galtieri lost. Then Scargill took on Thatcher. I was at school for the first conflict and at university for the second. They were both educational experiences.

"The only time any nation has pushed Trump as hard as they can, Iran, he blinked"
Trump has pushed back at Iran. If he "blinked", is that the response that was anticipated of him? No one else had stood up to Iran gaining weapon's grade nuclear power as agreed by the US, UK and EU.

"I'm still not sure why and how she remained PM after the invasion of the Falklands."
Thatcher restored pride in being British

"Anthony Eden is only just remembered for Suez."
Before my time, but slightly addled by some serious prescription painkillers, Eden was uniquely worried (along with the French) that Nasser was a major threat. Nasser was playing the US off against the Russians, and the US wanted Egypt onside.

"Had it not been for Hitler Churchill would be a minor figure "
Quite possibly true. But he was the right man for the job when needed.

It is easy to judge with the benefit of hindsight, so what is it that Trump has ACTUALLY done that is so scary? The BBC 6pm news was reporting that Trump has the hump over Sir Kim. Neither Sir Kim nor Trump can be blamed. The UK media are now making mountains out of one mole's spill.

"Peak levels of Highland biting midges expected soon"

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-highlands-islands-48912757

"The first of this year's hatchings in May happened two weeks earlier than usual, according to the scientists behind the Scottish Midge Forecast.

This was because of warmer than usual temperatures."

Some of you may remember, I was there (Inner Hebrides) in May, and snow was down to 1,800'. There were no midges there then.

But at least they admit this:

"But the cool and unsettled weather that followed affected the second hatching of midges and peak populations normally seen in June did not occur."

The rest of the piece is speculation based on forecast warm, damp weather. There are ALWAYS lots of midges in Scotland from late June, through July and August, and sometimes into September and even October. This strikes me as another puff piece.

I note the Twitter account dates from 15th November 2018 and before then used the account @EV_TQs
So the campaign is NOT new ..so it's NOT news
ah that account was only founded on Nov 12
before then was a blog

That post is dated June 28, 2018

\\ Charlotte Smith (11) has been placing laminated cards on electric cars for their owners to find, thanking them for using an environmentally friendly car. Charlotte has already placed 300 cards on cars across Birmingham!

She originally came up with the idea because she kept getting a bad cough and asked her dad what was making her cough all the time. They did some research together and discovered that emissions from cars can cause all kinds of lung conditions. Apparently, your lungs can protect themselves from anything the width of a single piece of hair, however the particles that are released from car emissions are 10 times smaller than a strand of hair!
(why didn't they go to the doctors ?)
... Along with the help of her father, who works for Jaguar Land Rover,
they decided to make a little thank you note to give to electric car drivers. //

Her Youtube account is dated March 2019
