Equally bunk is the Gaia concept, where the planet will reject us for being nasty to it and the other organisms. Palaeontology shows clearly that Gaia is something of a hands off Mum and doesn't care if things get wiped out. If she were sentient she'd be a tiger mom and her first priority would be to get the successful kids out the door to independence at the first opportunity.
