#Greensgobyair

I was amused to see that Tom Nelson picking up on a Twitter hashtag I had used a few days ago when I noticed enviro-lawyer Anthony Hobley heading off to Barcelona. Tom had seen Jonathan Overpeck on his way to China and Time magazine's Bryan Walsh on his way to Las Vegas.

I wonder if the #greensgobyair hashtag might take off. If so, expect to see a great deal of Futerra's Solitaire Townsend, whose addiction to air travel seems hard to kick. In February she visited Vienna and San Francisco. In March it was Brazil. She was back in Brazil at the start of May, noting that customs officers were remarking about her regular visits:

Boarder [sic] guard flicks through stamps in my passport "you must like Brazil". Well, duh.

In the last few weeks she has visited Amsterdam, Cumbria and today has jetted off to San Diego.

Solitaire's twitter name is GreenSolitaire. But if she is green, who isn't?

@GreensInSpace

BTW, have they never heard of video-conference?

Probably not, because that's used by people who need to earn money, not spend others money...

Fish and chips sounds good! Does the 2nd or 3rd week in July suit anyone? It doesn't have to be the Prince of Wales in Iffley if anyone else has other suggestions - but that is convenient for Jonathan and me (saves getting the helicopter out... :-) )

(Oct-Nov too when Stephen Richards is around!)

I don't think it's fair to call Solitaire a trustafarian. She was born on a "nasty" Bedfordshire council estate.

The foundation of her fortunes was a grant of £100,000 from NESTA to make two short films on climate change.

#grantafarian?

I love the way here Wikipedia entry has her as a "businesswoman". While technically true, in the sense she has a business, it's not like anyone would want her running a business that actually made anything and had to compete on price or quality.

Thanks to all above (especially Foxgoose) for a great bunch of comments. I laughed, I cried, I held my breath while waiting to see what was coming next.

That said, we need to keep reinforcing the irrefutable point (does anyone know who said it first, BTW?) that we might start believing these people when their own actions are consistent with their nostrums.

They continually badger people along the lines that every individual's actions are important - which for some reason, reminds me of Woody Allen's "Every sperm is sacred" - and then breezily except themselves.

The founding and long term leader of the Australian Greens, former Senator Bob Brown, comes from Tasmania - which is an island south of the continent.

During his long career, he flew back and forth to Parliament over 1000 times, not to mention his flights to do with maintaining Green party matters and causes. Then there were the overseas trips. But, I repeat myself.

Thank goodness China and the US have apparently sunk (at least for the time being) the EU's attempted money-grab on airline passengers in the name of Saving The Planet.

Interestingly enough, the wallpaper on her twitter page doesn't show any jet aircraft, although it does have a fetching "London to New York Zepplin", as well as other green conveyances, perhaps powered by the passengers' own sense of self satisfaction.

I think there is something that has been missed, though Foxgoose touched on it obliquely.

Tattoo Man and Woman and Tribe (TMAWAT)

The intellectual greenies who push this "how to cook low-carbon scones, whilst sending still being to down some chianti", have to rub shoulders with TMAWAT in their budget airline scrum check-in.

Flying regular airlines used to be a class experience - plebs flew charter.

Just because the socialists wanted to save the proletariat, doesn't mean they wanted to share any space with them. Or to have no means of differentiating themselves as superior intellectuals.

Intellectual Greenies are no different. Whatever people think of budget airlines they have been a great leveller.

Intellectual Greenies do not want to stand next to TMAWAT in a queue.

Ask anyone who has lived in an ex-Socialist country for any period of time, you will notice the special summer camps, hotels, travel rights, hospitals, doctor, sports facilities.

"The future generations of TMAWAT are being downtrodden, and we know how to same them. Leave us alone to get on with the job."

@ruth

2W July looks good for me. 3W not so good.

And maybe a City Centre venue (KA?) would attract more out of towners..combine a day in the Dreaming Spires with a brilliant climate chat in the evening?

What do others think?

@stewgreen

Very nice example! I liked first question "How much difference can two degrees really make?". I thought it would be about something other than turning my home thermostat down...

Latimer,

As an out-of-towner, I'd adore to be there. My out-of-townness unfortunately is far away enough that I probably wouldn't make July, even though I have a little "fund" slowly building up just for the eventuality that I know enough in advance of something going on that I could actually get there - always thinking a Bish presentation with get-together after (would be coming from Italian part of Switzerland).

Very hard to face that July probably not possible, given Jonathon and Ruth presence as well. If Oct-Nov also an option suggested by Ruth (and would incl Stephen Richards) really might happen, would love to know enough in advance - maybe even Hilary could make it over from her extreme out-of-townness!

Watched the start of this linked video of "Solly":

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-0BbI_ykUXE&NR=1&feature=endscreen

As she says she's a spin doctor, the IPCC do "the product" she just sells it.

She's actually a pretty good speaker and doesn't come across as brainwashed as others. She's just doing a selling job. Just a shame she's hitched herself to such a shoddy bandwagon with such a poor "product".

I shouldn't think her air travel hypocrisy matters to her, she comes across as doing it for the money (like most of us). Unfortunately as Dreadnought's link shows she's good at it and the £1M Govt contracts are rolling in.

So once again it looks like we're paying for this nonsense. How can we stop this?

Jun 3, 2013 at 1:38 PM | Unregistered CommenterSimonW

Kendra,

I, too, would love to be there ... and I, too, have a little fund that is/was building (it's hard to hide the declines at times ... not to mention an unanticipated "pause") So my very extreme out-of-townness may well prove to be an insurmountable barrier - at least for this year. This projection could change though, if I win the lottery sometime between now and then;-)

Hilary, let me know when that happens and I'll meet you there!

- This ties In to Donna's Post “don’t listen to what they say, just watch what they do
How We Know the ‘Climate Crisis’ Isn’t Real.”

BTW - notice how Activists will fly everywhere EXCEPT to debate a Skeptic.. cos debating DENIERS is banned ..but surely if they defeat a Skeptic on TV they will really hasten their cause ..and so save millions of lives etc.

- #GreensGoByAir at TAM in July I just checked the list of VIPs ..
- As well as jet setters like Michael E Mann I can spot other #GreensGoByAir who push Green religion within the Science Skeptical movement like Sharon Hill, Steven Novella
(Randi himself continues to be shouted down when he tries to speak truth on climate)
- Can anyone else spot any more #GreensGoByAir in that list ?
