Lord Deben is worried

Lord Deben is worried. Veolia UK Ltd, the company he chairs, stands ready to connect just as many windfarms to the grid as the country is willing to subsidise. But without clear national carbon reduction targets, the company is unlikely to make its mint.

In an entirely unrelated step, Deben has written to the Energy Secretary.

We note that the Government has acknowledged the benefit of a 2030 carbon-intensity target in your recent proposed amendment to the Energy Bill. However, the delay in setting this until 2016 at the earliest means that a high degree of uncertainty about sector development beyond 2020 remains. This will adversely impact on supply chain investment decisions and project development, therefore undermining implementation of the Bill and raising costs for consumers.

  • Scenarios recently published by the Government in its gas generation strategy suggest the possibility of a significant fall-off in investment in low-carbon power generation after 2020...
  • This could be particularly damaging for investment now in the offshore wind supply chain.

That would be a shame, wouldn't it?

You are not quite the only one to have encountered Gummer.
I met him at the Conservative Student Conference in (I think) 1961. (Heath was the keynote speaker and I nearly fell asleep during his speech, as did several others — but I digress).
I remember very little about any of the other participants except one Selwyn Gummer who came across as a supercilious prat. I have had no cause to change that opinion in the last 50 years. The fact that in tandem with Yeo he is determined to line his pockets at the expense of British industry and the lives of the British poor does not surprise me in the slightest.
The sooner that parliament wakes up to the damage that these two (with Davey as lead in the chorus) are intent in inflicting on the UK for their own grubby purposes the better.
The better for them even because I would not wish to be in their shoes when the shit finally hits the fan and the "people of England" discover exactly who is to blame for the mess they will then be in.

@Gummermustgo

I am serious about this- I intend to use the "Misconduct in a Public Office" law
http://www.cps.gov.uk/legal/l_to_o/misconduct_in_public_office/#a04
The elements of the offence are summarised in Attorney General's Reference No 3 of 2003 [2004] EWCA Crim 868.
The offence is committed when:
• a public officer acting as such
• wilfully neglects to perform his duty and/or wilfully misconducts himself
• to such a degree as to amount to an abuse of the public's trust in the office holder
• without reasonable excuse or justification.

This seems sufficiently broad to at least form the basis of a complaint to the Police.

Maybe the "Bish" (Andrew) could host a site here where anyone who knows information that would support such a case against the dreadful duo (Deben and Yeo) could post it?

Don,

I wish you luck, but is not a complaint to the police OTT? Why not just use the established procedure (at least for Deben in the House of Lords):

Or don't you trust it (in which case I would not blame you)?

You don't suppose that the 'delay in setting the carbon-intensity target until 2016 at the earliest' is due to the government finally realising that the sh*t is going to hit the fan big-time unless they get some 'proper' power stations built, do you..?
Am I endowing the likes of Ed Davey with the teeniest bit of common sense - or is it just wishful thinking..?

@Roger, you got it in one.
More like

With a formal complaint to the Police, they must look into it.

Love it! Come to think of it, after fruitless battles with the BBC Trust, Legal Services Ombudsman, etc., I am sure you are right. I used to think that standing up and telling the truth was enough for justice to be done, but it isn't, and probably never was.

I am sure that you realise that all of the "establishment" will be lined up against you, and I admire your courage in taking them on. My very best wishes!
