Cryptic

Something interesting going on at WUWT...

PrintView Printer Friendly Version

Reader Comments (258)

In my previous comments on this thread I made an unsupported premise in my speculations about what WUWT will reveal at ~noon (PDT) on Sunday, July 29.

I presumed it would be positive news for the openness and freedom of skeptics in the scientific discourse on climate science.

That presumption is unwarranted. It could be unprecedented and globally focused negative news for skeptics who support the free and open discourse on climate science; it could be bad news about the tradition of scientific skepticism.

However, I think if it was really bad news against the freedom of skeptics in climate science discourse then I imagine that Anthony would have worded his post differently.

My Guess is FOIA comes in from the cold announces who he is and publishes the rest of the explosive political e-mails.

Beck has a freedom rally in TX.

FOIA decides we cannot have freedom without the truth the whole truth and nothing but t he truth,

Politico's implicated...SCAM is exposed.

CG3 - please.....

I think earlier in the week Anthony gave a rough date in reply to someone's comment of when FOIA might reveal Climategate 3. I think it was November. Maybe FOIA couldn't wait.

Another bit of speculation is something from CERN - but then why you CERN give an exclusive to Anthony?

Maybe Anthony has made contact with aliens and has rock hard proof. :)

New unprecedented peer reviewed paper proves global warming. A sex crazed poodle has bred with a tree and the offspring looks like a hockey stick. The results show what global warming looks like and is undisputed.

SETI finally delivers?

Jul 27, 2012 at 8:41 PM | Unregistered CommenterIan E

I've run through various possibilities from Heartland, Mann, Hansen, CRU, Gleick and even the possibility that Watts has been 'pressured'.

I'm now leaning towards CG3 and slightly more since Skiphil remarked about the phrase 'Something happened', it fits with Watt's style, he often says 'People send me stuff'.

I find it interesting that he should need to suspend the blog for two days, and I'm wondering what for, is it to prepare for something?

Anoneumouse,

Exactly . . . .

I have had some thoughts along the lines that Anthony knows that some individual(s) is/are aware of and very concerned about what Anthony will reveal. Is Anthony trying to give room to he/she/them to self-reveal the stuff that Anthony has before he reveals it? That would be a humane move on Anthony’s part. Kudos to Anthony if that is the case.

Well, whatever it is it MUST be worth the wait as the normal daily-posted deconstruction of warmist claims are sensational enough as it stands!
He's got me distracted from something else equally big happening here in the UK but for the life of me I can't recall what it is...........

Al Gore has found God and is very ashamed of his ill-gotten gains. He is about to renounce them and the bogus religion with which he amassed them. He is discussing with Anthony how do do this for maximum impact and how to best direct the loot to undo the damage. Gore will make this announcement on Sunday.

I suspect it's a release of information, probably not CG3 and probably political.

Whatever it is, I'd guess that Watts has more sense than to raise expectations and then dash them.

All we can say is anyone in any aspect of the climate world or related media, politicos etc. who has embarrassing secrets about their climate work should be nervous right now. I'm not sure Michael Mann is nervous, though -- Mann is so brazen that there may be little that could slow him down and he will just keep on spouting the same stuff like an Energizer Bunny.

What would be really great is if the next 48 hours might see a variety of public "statements" from climate miscreants trying to get ahead of the story, that turn out not to be related to what will be on WUWT..... won't hold my breath, though.

The Team should press Peter Gleick to make a full confession now to try to divert attention from whatever is coming....

Jul 27, 2012 at 8:57 PM | Registered CommenterSkiphil

I would love it if it was some previously shrill alarmist climate scientist who would come clean, as others have speculated. This could be triggered by different things.

1. An otherwise honest but naive climate scientist had been led to believe the science was solid all along, one day something leads him to dig a bit further, shortly thereafter he finds himself deep in the rabbit hole and spills the bean on what he has found.

2. A climate scientist involved in fraudulent science who was happy to go along while things were good finds the whole establishment is crumbling around him and wants to spill the beans before it is too late. After all, these guys are all subjected to the prisoner's dilemma on a daily basis.

NASA will announce:

[1] The moon landings were an elaborately staged hoax.

[2] James Hansen is to retire with immediate effect. All NASA climate science results are to be reworked and discarded in cases of doubt.

I'm inclined to rule out CERN since Nigel Calder hasn't dropped any recent clues. Bigger than Mann, I fancy- surely not vacation cancel-worthy. Must be Godfather-big. Opting for the political complicity angle. If my connection goes dead, I'll know it is.

and if it says it hates nudey men and the welsh just before it hits you then is also controversial!

Yeah, I think you have put your finger on it for me. I was thinking something seemed a bit hokey and it is that construction in that sentence .

This could be quite interesting either way - I don't see a middle ground - It is either something that justifies the hype or a big embarrassment and a bit of a reassessment for some people coming up.

I can't find any contradiction.

Did he say noon PST? I ask because in California we're currently under daylight savings, which would make it PDT, not PST, meaning even in California I would be 1 hour late to viewing his site for the news.

I just hope he's not abandoning blogging for paying the mortgage or something else perfectly rational that would deprive the world of his site.

Gleick shattered under pressure and directly implicated Michael Mann in sabotaging Heartland with the emails to prove it.

Jul 27, 2012 at 9:33 PM | Unregistered CommenterKaboom

One of the problems for sceptics with the other releases of ClimateGate was that the MSM didn’t notice for weeks. This way Anthony is ensuring that key eyes are already looking before any announcement is made.

If it is a new climate scandal can I vote it’s called WarmerGate as somebody suggested a bit too late last time.

Ooh an interesting challenge. I was talking about my initial instincts I certainly wouldn't state any certainty of the meaning of words based on my rather hazy knowledge ;)

So I looked them up on ye Google:

un·prec·e·dent·ed/ˌənˈpresəˌdəntid/
Adjective:
Never done or known before.

con·tro·ver·sial/ˌkäntrəˈvərSHəl/
Adjective:
Giving rise or likely to give rise to public disagreement.

Hmmm. Still getting a positive reading from my hoke-ometer;)

Jul 27, 2012 at 9:38 PM | Registered CommenterThe Leopard In The Basement

Any leak of emails from a high profile new source, especially a Government source, would be unprecedented and controversial, viz., Wikileaks and Climategate. Anthony would also need some time to talk with lawyers as to what can and can't be safely posted.

"UPDATE: I’ve been advised by concerned friends that speculation on the nature of this announcement has gotten out of hand in the blogosphere, and that was not my intent. My intent was to give me time to work and something very important without the distraction of this blog, emails/twitter/facebook, etc.

As many of you know, running WUWT is a monumental task which I could not do without the help of many people. Even so, it still requires my constant attention.

First, I am well. This isn’t a health issue for me or my family.

Second, my announcement has nothing to do with FOIA issues or other sorts of political or social theories being bandied about on other blogs.

It does however have something to do with one of my many projects, and it has important implications that I’m sure everyone will want to know about.

I greatly appreciate all the concern and interest, and I look forward to being able to share all my work on Sunday. – Anthony"

".or it's the unveiling of the identity of RC/FOIA, but we all know it's Steve Mosher so hardly a big story there. (j/k)"

ooh update on WUWT

Anthony says the speculation has gotten out of hand.

It's nothing FOIA/political, it's something else he's been working on himself.

So doesn't sound like a "scoop" per se, not about someone else, but something important that AW wants to announce?

We'll know on Sunday....

One more thing:

Has anyone checked with Watts to make sure he is still not on vacation and that this was really posted by him and is not simply the website being hacked?

Would Climategate 3 be unprecedented?

It would be much less controversial than the first one. Also we might have expected it to happen next year given the time between the other ones..

Can't see why Anthony would go into shutdown just for Climategate 3. I can't believe there would be anymore damning emails than we have already seen.

Jul 27, 2012 at 9:58 PM | Unregistered Commentercosmic

As has just been said Dutchboy has nailed the problem which is to imagine what could be of global importance, unprecedented AND controversial. Controversy is usually associated with opinion (spoken or written) so on Sunday somebody is going to say something of global importance and it will be unprecedented that this person should say such a thing.
The only scenario I could come up with (based on a previous post) is:

OK aliens have landed in Anthony's backyard (this would satisfy the global and unprecedented bit) and they had some good news and some bad news.
The good news was that CO2 has sod all to do with controlling temperature above 200ppm.
The bad news is that the rest of the universe is Islamic and we had better get with the program FAST or they demolish the Earth and build an intergalactic superhighway through here -.-

He's running his car in a cold fusion power source which he tinkered together for $100. He's just making an extended car trip sans petrol to confirm it works.

Of global interest, unprecedented and controversial. Ticks all the boxes.

Now everyone can be happy, no coal, no CO2 emissions, no climate scams, no CCS, no nuclear power stations, no windmills, no energy bills, no taxation to save the planet (on that excuse) and no drowning polar bears, because now we have the means to refrigerate the Arctic.

He'll publish the design on Sunday so that we can all start making them. Expect significant activity on the stock market on Monday.
