Mann the barricades

Michael Mann's talk at TED has just hit the ether. It's a pretty political piece, and I do wonder about TED allowing their brand to be used in this way.

Please try to avoid ranting in the comments.

Al Gore spoke about climate at TED in 2008, and Gordon Brown spoke at TED Global in Oxford a few years ago, when he was UK Prime Minister. I don't know if TED even claim to exclude 'politics' from their conferences. They may claim to be 'non-political', but they probably conjugate it: 'I am non-political, you are political, he is a fascist'.

We now have a court finding that the scientists are persecuting critics -- not, as Mann would have it, critics unfairly targeting scientists.

So, 'hide the decline' is now joined by 'hide the flat-line'... do Mann's analytical skills know no bounds?

That conference is clearly at Penn State (the PSU in the background), and probably pre-dates the Climategate 2 release. It would difficult to turn down an offer to speak by a "local hero".

We need to see the same presentation fisked split-screen, showing Hansen's real projections, rather than re-running them with updated sensitivities or whatever other sleight-of-hand Mann used to get a perfect fit, and all the other junk he has in there.

Mann is the master of the "big lie". This new presentation clearly is designed to show "the models are nearly perfect", and that needs to be blown out of the water NOW, before it becomes the conventional wisdom.

@ Dave Salt "presenting 'updated' projections in this way without explaining that they've been tweaked in order to align it with the as-measured record is surely unethical?" It may be unethical, but if you can get away with hiding the decline, why stop there?

Good point about it being a "TEDx" event and not from the real "TED." TEDxPSU - where Mann's talk was presented - is indeed the Penn State "chapter" of the real TED.

The web site for "TEDxPSU" is here:

http://www.tedxpsu.com/attend/

And indeed the event was held on Nov. 13, just a week before the Climategate 2.0 emails were released.

Mann did mention the previous emails, his only point being that they were "stolen" as part of his overall banal rant about the "attacks on scientists."

I'd never seen the term or its acronym before: Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD)

From a source I trust much more than anybody from State College, Pennsylvania, I am now informed.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Narcissistic_personality_disorder

From my position (amateur shrink) I concur in the diagnosis.

(At breakfast this morning, my wife asked if this is the first time since the winter we moved here (1989-1990) that we have had this much snow on the ground and remaining, I told her that all the folks who might know might be in Bali, but that I would ask around.)

Thanks.

Not much new there--quite a few attacking Mann and his snake-oil, a few factless assaults on "deniers", "denialists", and Anthony Watts.

I took the occasion to say again:

The thing nobody and I do mean NOBODY, will talk about is this:

Who can prove that warming is bad?

Historically, cold is associated with pestilence, disease, famine, and poverty (among other unpleasant things).

Historically, warm is associated with plenty, comfort, and prosperity.

Garry writes: "It looks as if he models himself as the new Hansen or Al Gore."

There is a space open, why not? Gore has jumped the shark, Hansen has been a heretic to the AGW Establishment for over a year since he denounced Cap and Trade to be the obvious scam it is. He appropriate's Hansen's name too, by using it for some suspect graphs.
