Mind you, I've always thought Katya Adler was one of the BBC's better and more balance reporters. The surprise is that she's allowed to have an article in these terms on the BBC website's front page.

The BBC has always prided itself on the quality of its drama and acting. Katya never read the pre-written script, with foregone conclusion.

If there was no free cross -Mediterranean ferry service advertised, which guaranteed entry into the EU, plus food and accommodation on arrival, why would anyone start their journey?

Under new Leadership, that does not take EU compliance with its own assurances for granted, Italy has called out France and Germany. Macron has impaled himself on Merkel's sausage, and fairly soon, may find himself without any other means of support.

the way that the entire migrant business has been (mis)handled centrally needs more exposure - the logistics tail of how the the flows happen simply isn't on media radar and we're expected to believe that a couple of hundred sub Saharan Africans have walked to the Med shore found a new inflatable boat c/w outboard motor and 20 miles of fuel and life jackets and their simple folly of setting sail in it requires a rescue....

I don't know about anybody else but I'm beyond fed up with the con.

Germany and France's policy for avoiding immigration goes this way - 1) insist the migrants register at those countries they arrive at ie not France or Germany. 2) be as unpleasant as possible so they don't want to come. 3) Move them on to anyone else eg UK. Personally I'm surprised the Med countries didn't work this out ages ago. Merkel didn't realise that her invitation brough Germany into the migrants' cross hairs. No backsies.

The migrants aren't going to stop until the consequences of going are worse than staying put. So the EU has to take them right back where they came from. The EU won't do that until it's too late. It requires too many changes the human rights act.

"Merkel says future of EU depends on finding solution to migration crisis

Angela Merkel has said the future of the European Union hinges on whether it can find answers to the “vital questions” posed by migration.

Addressing the Bundestag before heading to Brussels for a European summit that is likely to determine the future of her fraying coalition government, the German chancellor said European leaders should find a solution to asylum challenges “by allowing ourselves to be guided by values and rooting for multilateralism rather than unilateralism”.

If the heads of government gathering in Brussels failed to do so, Merkel said, they risked creating a situation where “no one believes in the value system that has made us so strong”.

Merkel heads to Brussels under immense pressure from her interior minister, Horst Seehofer, who is threatening to unilaterally turn away at German borders any migrants who have already registered in another EU country, unless the chancellor can come up with a European solution to the problem by 1 July.

In a 26-minute speech to the German parliament, notably in Seehofer’s absence, Merkel sounded a note of pessimism about the chances of striking an EU-wide deal on migration by Friday morning.

“We are not yet where we want to be,” she said, adding that EU leaders remained at odds on two out of seven key questions relating to common standards for asylum procedures across the EU and a quota system for redistributing asylum seekers – a proposal that has proved a contentious issue acrossEurope for the last two years.

Merkel defended her decision to keep open German borders to refugees at the height of the crisis in September 2015, saying: “I still believe it was right.” "
