Narrative vs Real World
Local BBC this morning kept repeating the story of a tennis player yesterday leaving due to the poor smoke affected air.
I thought that was weird, cos I knew rain was predicted for today
… Then when I checked I found the rain had already started before the BBC had run this doom story. Storms which had washed the air.

Indeed the actual BBC web story about Wednesday’s incident says
“qualifying resumed after a three-hour delay
but **heavy rain** meant matches were ultimately suspended for the day ”

TinyCO2, most democracies work on a 4-5 year cycle between elections for good reasons, and after 3 years of political chaos and indecision on almost everything, the Conservative Government has a clear mandate to get on with Brexit , deal with the backlog, and all of the numerous bad and good issues that arise out of Brexit.

The Government is going to be busy, and their jobs will be so much easier if Labour continue with the same chaos and infighting until the next election.

word, not work. Seriously I read that 3 times and didn't spot it.

gc, we need +5 years (which would equate to 10 with our current system) of time to get through Brexit because there will be bumps in the road - both Brexit and non Brexit (which will be blamed on Brexit). Brexit almost needs to be a forgotten work by the time we get an electable Labour Party. Those EU loving scardy cat Millennials need to see that they were lied to that the UK is nothing without the EU. Some businesses are teetering on the edge now, new businesses starting up. The NHS needs to be in better shape and the borrowing needs to be under control. Hopefully the EU will look less attractive by then too.

The BBC ran this story days ago. Why is front-page news now?

"Climate change: Last decade confirmed as warmest on record
By Matt McGrath
Environment correspondent"

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-51111176

Note that none of the last 3 years have been as warm as 2016.

Shock horror:

"Matt Hancock: 'We shouldn't be flying less'"

bc.co.uk/news/av/business-51121875/matt-hancock-we-shouldn-t-be-flying-less

"Health secretary Matt Hancock has told BBC Radio 5 Live Breakfast that he thinks connecting flights around the UK are “incredibly important” and we shouldn’t be flying less despite air travel’s contributions to carbon emissions.

The government has stepped in to help save Flybe - the UK's biggest regional airline outside London.

More than eight million people fly with the regional airline each year to and from airports in the UK, as well as to Europe."

Personally I haven't flown anywhere for the past 2 years, and only once in the last 4. How many "Greens" can say the same thing? Caroline Lucas? George Monbiot? No, I didn't think so.

"Flybe: Airline and rail rivals attack government rescue"

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-51117885

The government was attacked for NOT saving Thomas Cook.

At last - some common sense! I've been calling for this for years:

"Councils agree plan to convert landfill waste into energy"

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-glasgow-west-51120236

"Cardiff congestion: £2 charge plan to cut city traffic"

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-51108586

"Birmingham car ban: How would the scheme work?"

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-birmingham-51105586

The article doesn't really say....

Golf Charlie, "....clear instructions on how to fail democracy...". As you say, Momentum are polling their members (is that the right word?) and recommending how they vote.

This reminds me of a government leaflet prior to the 2016 Referendum advising citizens how to vote. I thought, "Damn you for your impertinence!", along with enough fellow-citizens who stuffed it up 'em.

The number of desperate people trying to escape France/EU continues.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/jan/01/huge-rise-in-number-of-people-trying-to-cross-channel-to-uk-by-sea
Wed 1 Jan 2020

"The number of people making desperate attempts to cross the Channel by sea from France has quadrupled over the last year."

Are there any reports of UK legal residents returning to the EU, because the benefits are better? Presumably, most are hanging on in the hope that a sensible deal can be resolved with the EU, otherwise the EU is going to be overwhelmed with demands for new housing, schools, hospitals etc

The Bank of England may have to retract its gloomy economic forecasts, as EU economists get more gloomy about theirs

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-51117888

"The UK's inflation rate fell to its lowest for more than three years in December, increasing speculation that interest rates could be cut.

The rate dropped to 1.3% last month, down from 1.5% in November, partly due to a fall in the price of women's clothes and hotel room costs.

December's inflation rate was the lowest since November 2016.

Analysts said it raised the chances of a rate cut, with inflation below the Bank of England's target of 2%.

"Very soft UK inflation data for December leaves the door wide open for a Bank of England rate cut on 30 January," said Melissa Davies, an economist at stock broker Redburn.

The Bank's main interest rate is used by banks and other lenders who set borrowing costs.

It affects everything from mortgages to business loans and has a big effect on the finances of individuals and companies."

Having a relatively weak Labour has been a godsend for Brexit and we need it to continue for another 10 years. Contrary to Labour's assertions, we're not in any danger of becoming a Victorian style economy/state with people in work houses or starving as they sell matches on the street. Those on the streets now are there for very specific reasons that will probably never go away. What we will need to do though is accept disruption while we find our post Brexit normal. What we won't need is Labour arguing black is white for the sake of being the opposite to the Tories.

The story is interesting, but it also suggests that Guido Fawkes is being used to leak
