On the GMT debate, I'm happy with the current situation, but with one major criticism - and therefore I would recommend one change. The clocks go back in the last weekend in October - i.e. about 7-8 weeks before the winter solstice - so why do we have to wait until the end of March - i.e. over 3 months after the winter solstice - before they go forward again? I would put them forward in the second weekend in February instead.

The "save the planet brigade" should support that, since people going out to work would be likely to have their home central heating running for an hour less every working day between early February and late March on that basis. That's lots of oil and gas not being used on that basis, plus more usable daylight for most people.

We tried CET in Ireland when we joined the EEC. After 2 years we went back to GMT - even then sunrise in Galway is 40 minutes after it happens in Greenwich. Spain being on CET is a bit of lunacy. The 10ºW longitude passes through A Coruna so their sunrise is 40 minutes after Greenwich and 1hr 40 mins after Berlin time.

Are you suggesting we move back to "Bristol Time" without calling it that?
As the Greenwich Meridian passes through a large part of France (i'm closer to it here than I was in Derby or Perthshire) and Spain it would make more sense for them to switch to GMT/BST; national sensibilities and pride get in the way of that. Being further West compounds the problem, Stornoway time will be different from Edinburgh time.

Pcar. B2B? Yes, I suppose so - I used to advise solicitors. The only point I was trying to make is that if you work for a number of different clients a "universal" holiday is welcome as a time when most people will be on holiday.

stewgreem, anyone would have thought that the Green Blob have given up on Climate Scientists ever finding any evidence to back up their claims, and Ocean Acidification has gone flat, without a fizzle.

Now everything bad must be blamed on particulates, not CO2. This avoids Mann's Hockey Stick problem of flattened out LIA and MWP, and means the Green Blob won't fall like Climate Scientists, as Mann surely fails, and falls.

I think it is known as Contingency Planning, or Disaster Management.

@gc

iirc Carol Day was on the Balcombe team

Having a bit of experience with Judicial Review I think that process walks a bit of a tight rope in trying to deflect vexatious actions and proceed with cases where wrong has been done by a public body.

I have not actually been that impressed with the process when it has actually got past the initial permission hearing which decides if there is a case to answer. From what I've seen most environmental activism cases actually seem to fail the permission hearing - which essentially means they've wasted everybody's time but caused the public body to mount a deference (£££). I'd have more sympathy if the eco-cases were well founded - but many seem to be simply attempts to use the process to portray "prosecuting wrongdoers" and as a PR device =which is complete bollox and an abuse of the court.

Unfortunately an overriding issue is that our UK bureaucrats in general are determined to both arbitrarily challenge a complainant for having the temerity to actually take them to the Administrative Court AND protect individual wrongdoing by officials on the basis that they can do what they jolly well like - and that anyway they have deeper pockets (the public purse) and can bleed you white with simply your own fees never mind costs if you win or loose....

The suggested environmental court is just a another way to parasitise on society - more fees, more windbaggery, more meetings, PowerPoints and PR.

I'd always suggest that if a criminal angle is available - that is by far the best route and it's a given that it will get the opposition to pay attention.

Leigh Day are simply parasites - I suspect that some of them are totally cynical manipulators of process to boot.

...Also fix the time a GMT +1 (The Scottish objection is a no valid; they can easily adjust school and opening times to suit themselves).

Portugal tried German Time. It didn't work out well. They reverted to GMT.

imho BST (and all +1) should be stopped. Stay on GMT (or eqiv) all year.

Having been self employed [SE] for nearly 30 years, I don't agree. In theory I could take a holiday whenever I wanted. In practice it meant I stopped earning and possibly let a client down. At least with public holidays most people are not working and it was a good opportunity to take a break.

B2B SE?

B2C SE often have to work bank holidays, as do hospitality, leisure and retail.

I'm B2B and often work weekends and BHs as doing so eliminates M-F down time for clients.

Way back in 1989, firm I worked for had overseas clients and asked for volunteers to work BH days.

We live in a 24/7 international economy. Compulsory country specific Bank holidays are an anachronism.
