The greens and their psychosomatics

A time-honoured tactic of those who oppose an industrial development is to claim that it causing ill health. Certainly the opponents of the Horse Hill oil well have wasted no time in setting out the chronic ailments that yesterday's successful flow test have caused.

Most prominently, local resident Lisa Scott has described the horrors of her early morning jog:

It was not a fast or longer run than normal but at three points near the site I felt short of energy. I normally run 10-12k and never stop. But this was only 4-4.5k. It was like running through an invisible plume three times. I felt something strange. I needed to walk in case I fell. I could feel it in my lungs.

That will be the same Lisa Scott who was pictured a few days ago with Natalie Bennett. Lisa's the one in the middle, leading the protest group.

I'm not entirely convinced that Ms Scott's ailment isn't psychosomatic.

I think I have the answer, there is a theory which says that the fairer sex occasionally has navigation problems. Is it possible that this fair maid ran straight through the middle of the Horse Hill Gusher? Three times?

Reminds me of an acquaintance who came to visit us once. Was very, very allergic to cats. Sometimes had to miss work and take (paid) sick days because of it. Was doing ok this day, though. Wasn't sneezing, didn't have puffy eyes, wasn't breaking out in hives. Nice that she could visit us as we didn't have a cat.

"Oh, didn't we tell you? We've been cat-sitting a friend's tabby for a few weeks."

An almost instantaneous "attack" was followed by a quick exit, and (mercifully for us), an end to her visits.

I have no doubt that Ms. Scott availed herself of her local herbal/homeo/chiro/Traditional Chinese Medicine quack after terrifying experience.

"I felt something strange. I needed to walk in case I fell. I could feel it in my lungs."

As an ex-long distance runner, I can tell Lisa Scott exactly what's causing that. It's getting tired and old. I expect the whole Horse Hill experience is very tiring for her. It happens to us all. Move on dear, but slower.

"I think I have the answer, there is a theory which says that the fairer sex occasionally has navigation problems."

Let me take a stab at it.

If a guy becomes too full of himself (and becomes an a*hole or a bullsh*tter), generally his friends will call him on it.

The ladies, who don't like confrontation as much, will continue longer with the pretense that there isn't a problem.

That may be what is happening here. Some or all of these ladies now have inflated pretenses of themselves (and each other) to maintain, and even if some doubt creeps into one of their minds, just for social reasons, bubble-bursting is out of the question.

This happens to groups of guys too, but not as often?

That wood in the bottom left looks to have a greenish tinge which means it might have been treated with Chromated Copper Arsenate (CCA).

In the UK this is classified as hazardous waste and should not be burned. If it is burned it will release some of the arsenic into the atmosphere and the rest will end up concentrated into the ash, contaminating the land where it is dumped and the waterways that it washes into.

It doesn't add up:

The Esso pipeline from Fawley transfers fuel products (diesel, jet fuel, gasoline 95 RON, gasoline 98 RON) northwards and so couldn't be used for crude oil. However there is an oil pipeline from Wytch Farm in Poole Harbour to Hamble that runs through the New Forest National Park. The oil is mostly exported from Hamble to the Far East I believe.

When the line was built in the 80s there was considerable doom-mongering from the greens and the line had to be re-routed to avoid some sensitive spots. But the predicted catastrophes have so far not materialised during 30 years of operation. There are more risks from transporting the oil by rail or truck, as we have seen in North America recently when 50 people were killed by an oil train being derailed as it passed through a Canadian village. Rail has to be used as Obama keeps blocking the proposed Keystone XL pipeline.

One of the ironies of environmentalism. If they got their way none of us would have the equipment to debate anything on here. In fact, "here" wouldn't exist. Wooden computers powered by clockwork, anyone?

wellers:

The key point is there is an existing route and wayleave. Adding another pipeline to the existing route is much easier than negotiating a new route. There are already instances of shared wayleaves for oil and gas pipelines. In fact, the wayleave covers more than one pipeline: there is an "ex fuel oil" (10", insulated) line that goes to West London branching off at Alton.

I've actually encountered the wayleave for the Esso line on Hankley Common.

Indeed, you are so right. But why it never occurs to our little green friends that without the benefits conveyed by these same fossil fuels they would be impoverished, short-lived, unhealthy, and totally occupied from dawn to dusk in the task of staying alive is a mystery to me. Their only consolation would be that they would only have to do it for about 40 years instead of the present 85 or thereabouts.
I really wish some of them would try it; they might finally come to understand the statement that only two types of people are in favour of subsistence living: those who have never tried it and those who know nothing else.
The collection of tossers typified by the crowd that appears at the top of this thread wouldn't last a month.

But what if it were true ? and nothing wrong with a resident associating with a Green politician
#1 DramaGreens have a habit of creating mischievous PR, which will be picked up if their a media void
#2 But one does have to ask what if dangerous fumes were really released ? Cos you can't go around dismissing bona-fide complaints
..Well think it thru
- The corp and workers would definitely know about it.
They are charged with protecting the welfare of the workers and will have site monitoring procedures, which is why the EA don't come running to monitor ..They don't need to, the corp is monitoring and can't afford to hide records.
- Then on the protesters side ..they'd be masses of corroboration : 'fumes on something the protesters make out is a fracking site". ! Jesus there'd be dozens of social media videos, satellite trucks , people pulling kids out the area etc. No just one article quoting 2 people and and activist group.

That Lisa Scott seems a bona fide resident
and there is nothing wrong with a resident having views and being photoed with a politiician.
She has been involved in orgs, but not masses like a bigleader etc.

Lisa Scott, a Horse Hill resident: Feb12th

“I am extremely concerned about the injection of high pressure water and chemicals and the release of potentially huge and unstoppable methane gas under my home. I’m also worried about the huge increase in large lorries that will be seen in our rural roads and the impact this will have on horse riders, cyclists, pedestrians and motorists.”

(April 2015) Lisa Scott interviewed on BBC South East (please see their twitter feed) was complaining that they were still worried about more fossil fuels being extracted from the ground in light of all the protesting they have done. The protesers are doing a cycle ride to the site 12pm on Saturday
Oh hang she is an organiser
Lisa Scott, a Hookwood resident, who lives within a mile of the Horse Hill site said residents are getting “worried” after seeing “vehicles with chemicals”.

She explained a public meeting will be held at the Hookwood Memorial Hall on Sunday February 28 at 4pm to explain what has happened in other countries where fracking is used.

Why does a grassroots campaign have the resources to run both frackfreesurrey.com and frackfreesurrey.info ?
I'm more concerned about whether the writer of the article isn't just a DramaGreen using journalist title as a cover

Feb 18, 2016 at 6:04 AM | Registered Commenterstewgreen

Maybe Lisa's running is part of training for EXTREME SLOW walking ..which the activists have taken to using as a way of intimidating the construction lorries. They park their CARS down one side of the road then walk in front of the lorries (In a belief that if you are moving, then you cannot be prosecuted for obstruction..I think a mistaken belief)
I can spot some of the others in the photo in this recent video

As someone who works in Horley (just down the road) and who passes the site on my way to work every day I'm surprised her delicate petrochemical sensitive lungs and constitution have managed to last this long if she really is a local resident. When the wind is in the right direction the whole town has as strong whiff of kerosene (jet fuel) from the nearby airport! I suspect the miasma she detected has probably more to with the soap dodger crusty protester camp that's set itself up down the road....

The 'protestors' of course do not use organic natural camping gear like tents made out of canvas and wood nor are they wearing clothing made of natural materials such as wool, tweed or linen. Instead its all high energy plastics and aluminium.

I posted a comment at Frack Free Surrey's website explaining that no fracking is going to take place at Horse Hill. I got a reply from the admin saying "We have never said that fracking is certain to take place at Horse Hill", which is rather dis-ingenuous of them. He then started to bang on with the usual twaddle about 'catastrophic climate change', thus exposing the real agenda.
I've posted a reply with a link to a picture of smelly hippies at Horse Hill waving banners around complaining about fracking. I've also reminded him that CAGW is just a rather shaky hypothesis with no empirical proof, just a bunch of computer model predictions (sorry, projections).

I'm quite prepared to get binned by our host but I reckon it's worth making the argument that without the internal combustion engine, synthetic materials, gas lighting and then electric lighting, improvements in medicine (and inmedical knowledge), better diets, modern politics, emancipation, greater technology, current policing, or thousands of other factors would have been extremely difficult to achieve, if not in some cases downright impossible.
The universal use of coal, oil and gas — without which virtually everything we take for granted today would be impossible — has made a greater contribution to mankind's physical and mental well being than anything else you can name.

FYI, 20+ years in various parts of the Civil Service, often dealing with alleged adverse effects to 'toxic chemicals' in the environment, food, domestic products, etc.

They are almost inevitably self-reported and/or via the media, rather than from GP's or hospitals. Irrespective of the supposed causative agent, route of exposure, amount or duration of exposure, they inevitably are reported to cause a mixture of nausea, vomiting, headaches, fatigue, generalised rashes, dizziness and respiratory symptoms.

In other words, nothing that can be definitively toxicologically linked to a specific chemical agent, and are just as likely to be due a viral/bacterial infection, eating or drinking something that was past its use by date, or that extra bottle of wine the night before.

That is why the likes of the EA and PHE take little interest in such reports.

Just quibbling about several words in your comment Mike, otherwise, I agree with your comment.

Very few commercially made wool coats, sweaters and scarves are woven without reinforcing 'modern' fibers. Even that wool coat of Bennett's likely has a viscose liner and nylon thread reinforcement. Bennett's coat does have that quality 'hand' look that comes from a custom mix of fibers, wool and cashmere, wool and silk. I suppose they harvest a lot of cashmere and silk in the British isles?

Rare are ladies jeans that are truly 100% cotton. Even alleged 100% cotton jeans are often reinforced heavy monofilament and sometimes multi-filament nylon line.

This is before accounting for the substantial portion of ladies 'elastic or flex' jeans with anywhere from 3% to 10% spandex sewn in.
Runners especially love the spandex gear look and feel.

If the scarves and mitts are hand crocheted by the wearers or their mums, then they may be truly 100% natural fiber; unlikely though.

All in all, there is only a few pounds, at most, of truly animal/vegetable fiber products amongst them.

While arrayed around them are the fruits of modern fossil fueled life, especially as enjoyed by a 'throw away' culture. Almost totally missing are any signs of independent or self-supportive lives; N.B. grifters, cons and beggars may be independent, self supporting they are not.

Plastic throwaway tarp,
modern synthetics, fabrics rain gear and tents,
extruded cheap aluminum,
Fossil fueled sawn lumber from the 'big box' store,
Cheap imported cardboard,
Funky lantern (candle?) near, fossil fuel lantern far,
One does wonder if the candles are the inexpensive paraffin ones?
