Twotalitarianism

I must say I am watching the behaviour of the Twitter management carefully, as it looks somewhat alarming. As Anthony reports, Tom Nelson has been suspended for asking if a Katharine Hayhoe graph was "crap". That's asking, not saying. Meanwhile Gavin Schmidt describes a different graph as crap (that's saying, not asking) and it's all fine and dandy.

How does Twitter make these calls?

Is it just a function of the number of objections?
That seems like a mob mentality but an understandable simplification of the censorship process. Let the majority define the communities norms.

Or do some people (experts) get greater freedom?
That sounds like a dangerous path to tread.
Opposition to Schweitzer's views on eugenics would have been cut down in every way, for example.

It's because Gavin Schmidt (along with Twitter) belong to the Right People.

Nelson, Steven Goddard and the others, as free thinkers, do not.

After some recent unfortunate teenage suicides, Twitter has been under pressure to protect the vulnerable.

Isn't this just a case that sceptics are targeted by wamists hitting the "Report Abuse" button to register their dislike whilst sceptics being less censorious don't . A crude algorithm somewhere in Twitter reacts and lo we have censorship!

Anthony Hanwell and michael hart

So it appears that science abusers, have learnt how to abuse the anti-abuse safeguards. No doubt they are very proud of themselves for the time being.

Yes, Golf Charlie. Which rather suggests that they are themselves vulnerable teenagers. A bit like Obama's twitweilers.

Do you ever wonder if companies like Google, Facebook, Twitter and other search / social media giants have gone past walking a fine line on privacy and monopolistic practices so instead they work to support the whims of of the current administration so the regulatory bodies never quite get around to looking seriously at weather or not they are in compliance with the law. Seems to have happened with Google. Would not be surprised if Twitter is buying goodwill as well.

What is to stop Twitter from becoming like the heavily censored online Grauniad Macht Frei, surely much more than a twinkle is a few greeny eyes? Oh well, we've not been at war for a long time, maybe its too much to expect also freedom from religious fundamentalism.

Kudos to Twitter: how clever of them to sift the summ of all bloggerell, and note the stark distinction between Gavin's sober judgement and Nelson's crapulent twittering

Did you forget the /sarc tag, Russell, or are you really so cynical?

Apr 2, 2015 at 8:51 PM | Registered CommenterRadical Rodent

The Twitter better watch out. As we see in the Indiana case, concepts such as private property are subjective and arbitrary.
This leaves open the question is that really your Twitter? What gives Twitter or anyone the right to block customers from a public utility?

@M Courtney

The criteria could be no more than time of day, meaning, who has the finger at the censure button at a given moment.

I've observed this on several newspapers over the years. Depending on when a comment is submitted, it might be "gone" or let be. It makes sense, really. Consider who gets these jobs. Do they require a degree for this? If so, which? I expect the qualifications not to be much different than parking meter jerk.

Why not just state your point here, Russel ?instead of sending people to your stealth name website
(..the trick of the double v designed to deceive people it's Watt'sUpWithThat
makes you Alarmists look like DECEIVERS instead of straight talkers)

Context as I see it ..it's not a sure conspiracy
- Maybe Tom Nelson has less than 5,000 followers, that way when some people press the Report Abuse button your account gets suspended
- But if you have a lot of followers like the 7,000 Gavin has, then the Twitter algorithm protects you from quick suspension (any andway Skeptics don't do malicious complaints like warmists do)
- When Twitter sent Tom a message said he could go back in and should delete the "offending tweet", he instead tweeted a photo of that "threat"instruction from Twitter
...well that would count as rebelling against moderation
secondly the system algorithm would also detect that he had not deleted the "offending" tweet in the time allowed and would have automatically locked the account as suspended.
..@Support should then eventually get around to checking humanly.. and re-open the account, (but they may also be punishing him for rebelling against moderation)
..that process should been expedited due to the number of retweets in support of Tom
but since nothing has happened yet, then it is possible that @Support are being biased in just sitting on the re-instatement request

Apr 3, 2015 at 4:09 AM | Registered Commenterstewgreen

They certainly can't have suspended Tom Nelson for the word crap because there's a #crap that looks well used.

Apr 3, 2015 at 8:20 AM | Unregistered CommenterTinyCO2

Warmists who condone or even approve of this - you will be judged. Do you want people to conclude that the only way you can win your argument is by getting sceptics silenced? Are you that pathetic?

Apr 3, 2015 at 8:33 AM | Unregistered CommenterTinyCO2

Russell: *snigger* You are right, utter balderdash. Take comfort in the knowledge that site is so infrequently visited, most often by ensnarement, as you performed on me, you rascal.

Account re-instated - Update from WUWT : where claims Twitter employee claims
1. "It was probably an oversight", "They don't ban accounts for political reasons"
2. His intervention brought it to attention of Support team.
Reinstatement was Friday lunch 12:37 PM .. from 3 Apr 2015 from 8:50 AM - 1 Apr, so that's almost 76 hours suspension

Hangon 1. What with no employee intervention to get a suspension would be MORE than 76 hours ?
2. What the hundreds of tweets to @Support had no effect ?
3. The oversight excuse is not a credible
....(there is a screenshot bottom of WUWT comments, is it real ?)

- Tom's update "I think my suspension was a result of warmists abusing Twitter's "report abuse" function. I suspect that at least one of these people knows more specifics about my case: Gavin Schmidt, Katharine Hayhoe, Michael Mann."
Who's next Twitmo inmate ?
@Tallbloke seems to suggest people should get a backup account : Tom's is @brd333

Russell: is 2,590 a high number or a low number in blogging terms? Particularly if the blog name is so similar to one of the most frequently visited sites. (And why do you consider not knowing that answer makes one innumerate? You do know what “innumerate” means?) How many of those visitors were ensnared, as I was? And how many were spam-bots, as Stewgreen suggests?

Apr 6, 2015 at 1:55 PM | Registered CommenterRadical Rodent

To many people, especially those in a position to make and enforce arbitrary decisions, it seems 'free speech' means that "Anyone can say whatever they want, as long as I agree with them. If I don't then it is hate speech and they should be punished."
