Diary dates: physics edition

Joanna Haigh is going to be speaking on the physics of climate change tonight as part of the Royal Society's summer science season.

Earth’s climate is the result of interactions between multiple physical systems, such as the circulation of the oceans, winds and weather patterns, the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, or the amount of sunlight we receive. In order to understand how the climate is behaving, and how it might behave in the future, we have to understand the fundamental laws controlling these interactions: we have to understand the physics.  Join Joanna Haigh as she explains the integral role of physics in climate science and how its use has transformed our ability to model and predict climate change.

Details: 6:30 pm — 7:30 pm on Friday 04 July 2014 at The Royal Society. No ticket required

... the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere...
This is still a given, despite the remarkable paucity of evidence to support it?

RS + science? I do not understand the connection..

Surely you mean a PR campaign or the effects of proselytising and good goebbelsian propaganda issues

'Ability to model', no doubt - but 'predict'? 'Why so can I, and so can any man. But do they come...' true?

Talking of which...

It's not physics that has transformed our inability to model, and failure to predict, climate change but computers: we can now get a wrong answer in a fraction of the time it used to take.

Future improvements in supercomputing capability will enable almost real-time wrong answers.

This woman insists that people who question the IPCC are deniers and the word sceptic is not strong enough. [BBC The Life Scientific]

Climate change is a change in the statistical distribution of weather patterns when that change lasts for an extended period of time (i.e., decades to millions of years). Climate change may refer to a change in average weather conditions, or in the time variation of weather around longer-term average conditions (i.e., more or fewer extreme weather events). It can be caused by different factors.i.e. Biotic Process

It's not material science that has changed our powerlessness to model, and inability to foresee, environmental change yet PCs: we can now find a wrong solution in a small amount of the time it used to take.
