Hiding the Decline

You may have thought that you had heard everything there is to know about Climategate, but in fact there are still details of what happened that have yet to be aired.

For example, did you know that UEA were investigated by the police under suspicion of perverting the course of justice?

Or that Lord Oxburgh quietly changed his evidence to the House of Commons Science and Technology Committee, introducing a falsehood into the official record?

It's all in Hiding the Decline, my definitive history of the Climategate affair, which is now on sale here.

Bish: I'm really looking forward to reading this. BUT ...

I'm a subscriber and have logged in. However, after repeated attempts to take advantage of your generous subscriber offer (including logging in again (and again) and changing my password twice) I keep being refused. What's up?

Please advise which method of purchase benefits you, and this site, the most financially.

[BH adds: Any of these will be fine]

Kindle purchase without a hitch. I thought the 'THANK YOU for your purchase' screen against the standard Bishop Hill background was classy.

Similar problem to per. Tried via Amazon & USB cable. No luck. It appears to be on my Kindle but is not highlighted so can't open it. Anybody help?

Nobody who has the ability to read should ever need to "wonder" about the contents of a book. Once read, there will be knowledge of its contents and knowledge can only be good or should we revert to celebrating Opernplatz, sorry, Bebelplatz?

Hard copy ordered and like others looking forward to a good read. Also hoping it gets signed or I will personally make sure Scotland becomes independent well before 2014!

[snip]. I would guess that all regular readers are not only aware of exactly what "Hide The Decline" is about but also that most people including MSM had no clue. [snip]

[snip] Sure, most cogniscenti know that 'Hide the Decline' refers to the Divergence Problem, but that is inside baseball; the way 'Hide the Decline' is interpreted by hoi polloi is about a temperature decline, a much simpler idea to understand. Though the polloi mistake it, the lesson of scientific malpractice is more easily understood by mistaking it than were they to try to understand the Divergence Problem.

The wonders are performed in mysterious and ironic ways.

Ever heard the concept of innocent until proven guilty? Inconvenient for the polemicist though, isn't it?

Oct 26, 2012 at 4:22 AM | Unregistered CommenterBitBucket

[snip].
Gotta agree with you there Grant!

Ever heard the concept of innocent until proven guilty? says BB
Yes thank you BB but it's the proven innocent that we're still waiting for. Maybe that'll have to come after an investigation.
Any investigation would be nice!

Bitbucket, that is an interesting concept.

If take that argument further then all our media would just be pronouncements of "facts" or "truth". And as the only arbiter of such decisions would be the State, then all you would have is a State media. And we all know how well that has worked in the past.

There is something called freedom of speech and if BH has not broken any laws, then he is entitled to publish, and you are entitled not to buy. You have the CHOICE to spend your cash on something else that does suit your tastes. Welcome to democracy.

Bitbucket, as tail pulling goes that one is not one of your best.

To any who question the right for existence/premise/objectivity of this book... (ignoring the fact that you probably have not read it.)

We live in a wonderful society. There is only one valid response to BH. Really only one.

Right your own book. Simple.

A totalitarian state's response to this book would be to censor it. A democratic society's response would be to write your own.

Freedom of speech. Not freedom to censor.

Congratulations Bish. I don't have time to read it just now. I will later. You have covered the two most crucial issues in this field. The hockey stick and the dodgy proxies.

Professor Jonathon Jones (Physics – Oxford University)

The decision to hide the decline, and the dogged refusal to admit that this was an error, has endangered the credibility of the whole of climate science. If the rot is not stopped then the credibility of the whole of science will eventually come into question.

Andrew Montford,

In your book 'Hiding the Decline' in the section 'Notes on usages' you said,

We still have no idea of the identity of the person who disclosed the Climategate emails (nor indeed if they were a hacker or a whistleblower). I refer to the person involved as ‘he’, but this should not be taken as any indication that the field of suspects has been narrowed in any way.

Montford, Andrew. Hiding the Decline (Kindle Locations 72-74).

Do you mean to say that you know there is only a single individual responsible for disclosure of the Climategate emails? It seems that you do, yet you also use the word 'they' in your paragraph so I am sincerely confused by what you said.

Andrew Montford,

In your book 'Hiding the Decline' in Chapter 1 ‘The Hockey Stick’ you said,

Despite being aware that at least one of his associates agreed with McIntyre and McKitrick, Mann's immediate reaction was not to challenge MM03 through a response in the scientific literature, but instead to question the integrity of Energy and Environment. He suggested that the journal was ‘a shill for industry’, and on this basis dismissed the paper in its entirety rather than engaging with its criticisms of his work. As Mann told his colleagues:

“The important thing is to deny that this has any intellectual credibility whatsoever and, if contacted by any media, to dismiss this for the stunt that it is.”

With the assistance of a sympathetic journalist, Mann proceeded to issue a strongly worded denunciation of McIntyre and McKitrick. A decision was also taken to issue a further informal rebuttal via CRU, since the UK wing of the Hockey Team could then be presented to the public as neutral arbiters in the dispute.→ In due course a response was posted on Tim Osborn's website at CRU.→

Montford, Andrew. Hiding the Decline (Kindle Locations 309-319).

Andrew Montford, do you later in the book (I am still reading it) name the ‘sympathetic journalist’? I would like to know who it is.

John

[BH adds: He's identified in HSI]

In the part of my 62+ years I can still recall, it is the first time I have encountered the word ‘outwith’. At first I thought it a typo, but it is a word and it appears that it was used properly.

Andrew Montford said in ‘Hiding the Decline’ in Chapter 1’s section entitled ‘The Dog That Didn’t Bark’,

McIntyre quickly surmised the truth: Briffa had been taking advice on how to deal with McIntyre's arguments outwith the IPCC process.

@John

It's a Scottish thing (I think).

Here's an example from a court ruling:

8] When the matter came before the sheriff for debate on the defender's preliminary pleas the pursuer took the opportunity of submitting that the defender's first crave was incompetent in respect that her claim was made outwith the period prescribed by section 28(8) of the 2006 Act.

A random example!
