Commenting problems

Josh emails to say he is getting captchas every time he comments. Is this true for everyone? How much of a problem is it?

Yes, almost every time. But it's not a problem.

Yep, but I assumed I was in the dog house for intemperate posting :-) It only used to happen when I included a link.

Annoying, but the #($*#@&& Server Timeouts are a bigger problem.

Don Pablo

I was getting those server timeouts when I was using blockquote.

Feb 2, 2011 at 7:27 PM | Unregistered CommenterKevin

Yes, captchas everytime. I thought it was intentional.

Me too

Kevin
I was getting those server timeouts when I was using blockquote.

That may well be what has been doing it to me as well. I will keep an eye out for it.
Indeed I will try it now

I was getting those server timeouts when I was using blockquote.

Nope, it preview nicely. Maybe it is the phase of the moon. More likely taking a longer time to submit.

no big deal.

Yes.

Mentioned it a while back on another thread.

PITA actually. Great if you can get shot of it but if not, I'll survive ;-)

Feb 2, 2011 at 7:46 PM | Unregistered CommenterBBD

Yes on the captchas. Was getting timeouts too, but this is not specifically a blockquote problem
Personally, the captchas are no big deal.

Me too.

And me, been happening for the last few days

Try this in blockquotes. it may not be the blockquote, but something in this copy and paste within a blockquote

[T]here are known knowns; there are things we know we know.
We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know.
But there are also unknown unknowns – the ones we don't know we don't know.

Yes, every time for the last few days.
I just assumed you were trying to avoid the spammers. It's not a problem.

This time as well!

Can the captcha be modified so that you always have to type things that will make cultists puke?

Eg

D E L L E R S R U L E S
D O N T H I D E T H E D E C L I N E
M O N B I O T F L I E S T O H I S V I L L A
T H E R E W A S C O N S E N S U S A B O U T L E E C H E S T O O

- that sort of thing?

Feb 2, 2011 at 8:37 PM | Unregistered CommenterJustice4Rinka

Get them all the time too.

Feb 2, 2011 at 8:41 PM | Unregistered CommenterStuck-record

Half the time I can't post at the moment. I get as far as the captcha thing, submit my comment and it fires back an error.

Error 324 (net::ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE): Unknown error.

My confidence in successfully posting this is low.

One minor amendment to J4R's excellent proposal:

print the sceptical captcha under the name of the commenter in the comment itself. Trolls might then think twice before clicking 'Create Post'.

Squarespace keeps reporting errors - the black screen of death. I think someone is trying to shut you up....

Time to move to Blogger with Steve and Anthony ?

Feb 2, 2011 at 10:00 PM | Unregistered CommenterChris

Can someone who is seeing these errors please tell me what browser and version they are using. Squarespace say they have programmers waiting to go!!

Feb 2, 2011 at 10:04 PM | Registered CommenterBishop Hill

Steve and Anthony are Wordpress.

The captcha serves a good function. It forces a preview.

Happened a lot. Been interstate in Oz using an i-phone (Android). Thought that was the problem because my Author and Author email details were not remembered and I had to one finger them in. Gave up after 10 attempts. But as with DP de la S the time outs on my home computer (Windows XP) are the biggest nuisance.

Feb 2, 2011 at 11:27 PM | Unregistered CommenterGrantB

Last one sent from home computer obviously OK. vqxmo

Windows Vista Home/Chrome (up to date version)

Tried adding this to the latest post but am getting this - circumstances described, but can't post on that thread at all...

I can further report that if I make a post, preview, make changes, I (just) got this:

This web page is not available.

The web page at http://www.bishop-hill.net/process/CreateJournalEntryComment?moduleId=902845&entryId=10336294 might be temporarily down or it may have moved permanently to a new web address.

More information on this error
Below is the original error message

Error 101 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_RESET): Unknown error.

I've had to kill my browser and start again. Still not working.

All

To avoid server timeouts, do not compose comments directly in the comments box. Do it in an off-line text editor (Word or whatever you fancy), then paste in.

No timeout worries and your own copy if Squarespace blips and loses the comment.

Works for me.

Feb 3, 2011 at 11:21 AM | Unregistered CommenterBBD

I get them every time as well - but it isn't a problem.
In fact, I thought this has been installed on purpose, to avoid spamming and robots?
