US availability

A couple of people have asked about US availability for the Hockey Stick Illusion. We are currently discussing a possible deal with a US publisher. While these talks are ongoing we are not going to ship any further copies to Amazon in the States.

I am not confident that we will do a deal, because the publisher concerned is talking about very long lead times to get the book to print - as much as a year. I hope we can persuade them that this is not a good idea. If not, we will start to ship to Amazon.com again and will also start work on ebook editions.

Once again, if anyone knows a tame North American publisher, I'd love to be put in touch.

Update: Try here if you are outside the UK.

I've been waiting for several weeks to get my amazon order in the US. Hope you can resolve it soon. Given the solid sales you've had in the UK, I would think that a US publisher would pick it up.

What about NZ/Aus?

Your book is way more readable than Plimer's "Heaven and Earth" which was recently in the top 10 in NZ

Bish, will Amazon.co.uk not ship to the 'States?

I think readers outside the UK would be surprised how easy it is to order from either Amazon.co.uk or from Stacey International (the publishers). Shipping charges are not that large, and seem to be less than ordering from Amazon in the US.

Hi there
living in Switzerland, I had no problem ordering the Hockey Stick Illusion under www.stacey-international.co.uk and paying £10.99 by credit-card. My impression was that they deliver to any desired destination at not much extra cost!

I'd like to add that I ordered from Amazon UK to a delivery to NZ with no problems

Apr 3, 2010 at 10:03 AM | Unregistered CommenterAndy Scrase

Mine was delivered to France from Amazon.co.uk with no problems - it arrived mega quickly, too....

Apr 3, 2010 at 11:29 AM | Unregistered CommenterExpat in France

Possible to abridge it for an audio-book and then release it on iTunes? I haven't read it yet (it's still on my Amazon wish list) but I'm guessing it's neccessarily visual with graphs and so forth. Maybe that wouldn't work. Still, it's a good way of getting a much larger audience for it, if that's the intention.

O/T just heard the BBC blame a mud slide in Peru on climate change, I wonder if there is any science behind the claim?

Just to correct my last post the BBC report that some climatologists attribute the heavy downpours, why report an opinion without fact? Do they have to make the connection to climate change no matter what?

For some reason I have been picked out in Wikipedia for, in my submission to the parliamentary Climategate inquiry, recommending that the committee members should read chapter fifteen of the Hockey Stick Illusion.

Got mine from amazon.fr

They have a section for english language books.

I ordered my copy at the end of December from amazon.ca. There was a delay of a few weeks as the book made its way to Canada, and it arrived in mid February.

Best science book I've read in years. Thank you.

@ Philip, is that incorrect then? I read that on the parliment website about the inquiry? So i put it in the article.

Apr 3, 2010 at 1:47 PM | Unregistered CommenterMark Nutley

Dear Bishop Hill,
I will try to order your book on Amazon UK. However, the real purpose of this post is to let you know:
1) The service that you and others like you have done for humanity is difficult to overstate.
2) Those pushing AGW with pseudo-science were seeking personal profit but the effect would (and may still be) impoverishing billions of people in developing and developed countries.
3) The ultimate goal of the AGW hoaxers was power. The power to control economic development initially but, I think, eventually the power to control many aspects of our everyday life, such as personal mobility, what we eat, even the appliances in our home. People that surrender control of so many aspects of daily life in the name of "saving the planet" are not going to be able to contest further loss of personal liberty demanded by those who know what is best for us.
You (and people like you) are fighting a foe as dangerous (and even more insidious) than the Inquisition or Communism. I knew that the AGW'ers were lying to us. You did the hard work to prove it. Win or lose, you have done mankind a great service. Consider this post a poor substitute for the Nobel prize you will never receive.
My sincere thanks!

Somewhat OT but...

If you already have the book printed in the UK, why can't you just ship copies to Amazon US to distribute? Why do you need a printer in the US?

To prevent a UK publisher distributing in the US and vice versa seems to be anti-competitive.

Excuse my clearly naive understanding of publishing.

Apr 3, 2010 at 2:33 PM | Unregistered Commentertimheyes

Don't waste your time with a publisher who is talking about a year's lead time. That's a joke.

Apr 3, 2010 at 2:40 PM | Unregistered CommenterAnon

Andrew, you don't need a US publisher. The Book Depository sells the book with free worldwide delivery. Your book is £7.34 from The Book Depository including free worldwide delivery. They take orders from anywhere and ship to anywhere at no additional cost. I use them regularly and they are excellent. See here:

If your book is formatted on disc for POD, I can hearily recommend Bookmobile in Minneapolis for printing, and Itasca Books - Bookmobile's fulfillment service - for distribution through Amazon, Ingram, Barnes & Noble, etc. This is a high quality POD operation with which I have been doing business for more than two years. Check out www.bookmobile.com.

Can't help on the publishing side but if you need a place to maintain stock, I think we could distribute for you through Amazon Marketplace; central US location. I got mine by physically going to UK! Well done, by the way, also on your recent radio work.

Andrew

There are two issues. One is the rights that your current publisher has. A VERY careful reading of your contract is in order, preferably by a solicitor with literary rights experience.

There are MANY legal issues here because you do have a contract. These include: do they have all rights, first serial rights, or what? Do they have English Language rights? Assuming that they are willing to sell the US rights, how much? What ISBN number can be used? What about the cover art -- who owns it?

As Josh knows, I have a small business publishing books, mostly mine, but I am reprinting an old classic about the Gold Rush. Frankly, I would be afraid to get involved with Stacey's International already having a contract. This sort of thing can be a total nightmare, legally. You will need them to be a willing partner in this effort. Are they?

As for printing it, it can be in press in a week through Lightning Source Inc. They print books for publishers in small quantities and POD and distribute them through Ingrams (who owns LSI). The nice part is you pay for the book when it is ordered. No stocking issues. True, the books cost more, but you don't have a massive up front charge for printing 10,000 copies, having to ship them and store them. That is probably the reason Stacey's doesn't want to print in the USA.

I were them, I would go to Lightning Source for the POD printing and distribution via Ingram. It will cost more per copy, but is printed as a paperback, it would be available in a couple weeks, and available from Amazon, etc. I would not preprint a bunch of books because you have to pay for them up front. That would be thousands of dollars.

Oh, I just remembered another issue. I helped a very good friend set up his own publishing firm and he has about three books which he published through LSI. One was a republishing of Donegal Fairy Tales by Seumas MacManus. Amazon has gotten his version of it totally mangled with another rip off of the book. This can easily happen with your book having a UK ISBN number and another version a USA ISBN number. Amazon will screw it up.

The BEST solution would be for Stacy to set up POD with LSI in the USA. LSI has a UK branch they can deal with directly and have it printed in the USA.

I have offered to consult with you off line before. You should have my email address. If not Josh does. Feel free to contact me. I would be happy to help you.

I live in Canada and got my copy from amazon UK. Didn't take long to arrive, I paid a little extra for shipping I suppose but at least I have it. I grabbed a couple of other titles at the same time - books I couldn't get at either amazon.com or amazon.ca.

Apr 3, 2010 at 3:57 PM | Unregistered CommenterJohn

Please keep us informed. It is my intention to buy copies of the climategate books soon.
I would be most suspicious of a publisher who wants to tie up a book on a timely issue for a year to prepare....what?
If climategate had been a proof of the AGW accusations about skeptics, the bookshelves would have been flooded since December with books on the issue.
Publishers, like the corrupt news media, are active players in manipulating public perception.
Be careful.

I am using iUniverse.com to self publish my work on the fur trade from 1784 to 1812. They seem pretty organized and put books into Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Chapters Indigo here in Canada.

Apr 3, 2010 at 7:30 PM | Unregistered CommenterSean Peake

One or two thoughts...

- Waiting a year to get a book of topical interest published is a non-starter, I'd have thought.

- Amazon might be able to suggest a publisher who can move quickly.

- The publishers of Climategate by Steven Mosher and Thomas W. Fuller seemed to be able to move quickly.

- Finally, though I don't know the circumstances, cutting off supplies to a major retailer while some negotiations proceed does not sound a good move to me.

"C'mon people...pony up the extra shipping costs and get it from amazon.uk."

Why when you can get it same price as Amazon but with free shipping worldwide from The Book Depository? US customers can order and pay in US dollars, $11.16, see here:

http://www.bookdepository.co.uk/book/9781906768355/The-Hockey-Stick-Illusion?selectCurrency=USD

or Europeans in Euros (8.27)

Also British, Canadian and Australian currencies. Shipping is free worldwide. Why pay extra for shipping?

Ron,

For a significant period of time after the release of the Climategate file, Google autocomplete did not contain "climategate", so you would have good standing to suspect them of bias.

Don't know about Alexa myself.

I can see from whence you came, but, sadly, page rank is not just about visitors, so the premise fails.

In fact, nobody outside Google fully understands how pagerank is calculated - the algorithms are closely guarded secrets and change frequently.

The person who can crack the Google code will make him/herself very, very rich.....

"C'mon people...pony up the extra shipping costs and get it from amazon.uk."

I believe ScientistForTruth has pointed out the best and cheapest solution for everyone. Failing that, buying from a UK store advertising on Amazon.com (US). Why the current publisher can't print in the US is well beyond me, as I sell a number of copies of my books in the UK through Amazon in UK. And they are printed on both sides of the pond by LSI.

As for finding a second publisher, I doubt that will work out for copyright reasons. I would bet that Stacey owns the rights at this point for "English Language" if not "all rights"

[BH adds: Don P, there are no contractual issues preventing me selling the rights].

I went with Amazon.com as I wasn't eager to set-up a third Amazon account to add to my Cdn. and U.S. ones. But it is dragging out......

On the positive side, my copies of Roy Spencer's "The Great Global Warming Blunder" are now on the way.

Why when you can get it same price as Amazon but with free shipping worldwide from The Book Depository?

Not sure about free shipping - but I have only used The Book Depository via Amazon Marketplace, which automatically applies the shipping charge.

I have often bought things from The Book Depository when I've been searching for things on Amazon.co.uk. The Book Depository frequently shows up in Amazon Market Place.

Without one exception, books have always arrived quickly (I'm in Northern France), well packed and in perfect condition. In the case of the one exception, they asked if I had received the book. When I replied that it had not arrived, they immediately sent a duplicate.

Amazon's user ratings for The Book Depository are about as good as they get: Rating:98% positive over the past 12 months (355175 ratings.) 1811329 lifetime ratings.

I have no connection with The Book Depository except as a customer.

http://weblog.greenpeace.org/climate/2010/04/will_the_real_climategate_plea_1.html

It would appear that the eco-loons at Greenpeace have finally snapped and are now DIRECTLY threatening ALL sceptics.

Here is the threat at the Greenpeace blog site -

"If you're one of those who have spent their lives undermining progressive climate legislation, bankrolling junk science, fueling spurious debates around false solutions, and cattle-prodding democratically-elected governments into submission, then hear this:

We know who you are. We know where you live. We know where you work.

And we be many, but you be few."

I'm shaking in my boots - NOT.

When you consider that these eco-loons over the years have threatened to hang, burn, drown, strangle, shoot, imprison, inter and conduct medical experiments on sceptics isn't it about time the authortities took action.

After all if any other group of people conducted themselves in such fashion we would expect that politicians, the police and the judicial system to take action.

Why are such extremists and extremist views tolerated that directly threaten the citizenry?

Apr 4, 2010 at 12:27 PM | Unregistered CommenterMac

Will Chapters/Indigo carry it in Canada? (www.chapters.indigo.ca). Chapters is generally very good at carrying a diverse range of books. I was surprised to discover your book is not available from them.

Apr 4, 2010 at 1:54 PM | Unregistered CommenterRod Anderson

O/T I know Andrew, but I just finished your book. I read it in two sittings. So well written, you capture the science and the events with equal clarity. I am thinking of buying a few more copies to send to friends.

One analogy which may interest you is that it reminded me a lot of the Chris Mullin MP book about the Birmingham Six which I read 20 years ago. I recall how my jaw dropped at the contortions the British legal establishment went through in order to try to maintain the line that they were guilty. Eventually the dam had to crack and the truth came out and Mullin's book was central to that.

I think you have done the same for the hockey stick and have exposed the contortions of a very different but also powerful scientific/political establishment.

Well done!

FYI: I'm in the US and received the book without incident. I placed my order via Amazon.com (the US version) on March 7, 2010 and received the book on April 2, 2010. Total cost was $12.24. Yes, it was frustrating to wait for nearly a month to get the book, but the wait was worth it.

As an aside, I just finished reading it this morning. What a terrific read! I'd been following Climate Audit for the past several years, but with the sheer volume of information that has been presented over time, it's been really hard for me to track all of the goings on in some semblance of order. Bish, you do a remarkable job of knitting together the available information into an amazing and truly remarkable story. Thank you!

I know this is along shot, but Harvard Library's "Paige M. Gutenborg" book publishing machine is pretty damn interesting. Probably not viable for mass distribution. If I could buy the PDF I would have them print it and send it to me - just because it's possible.

Martin A (and Expat in France)

May I also recommend Claude Allegre's " L'Imposture Climatique"? No problems with Amazon etc, just pick it up from the nearest bookshop.

My French is not good, but I'm finding it a fairly easy read. It's more political and polemical than his grace's opus. 'Les Khmers Verts' is one example of the tone.

In answer to one of the questions above - we need to get a US publisher for two reasons - importing from the UK is expensive and the amount of money that comes back to me is very small. Secondly for marketing purposes.
