Bishop Hill Glenn McGregor in NZ Herald
Jan 18, 2010 Climate Glenn McGregor is a climatologist who is best known to sceptics from his appearances in the Climategate emails where Hockey Team members explain that he is willing to delay sceptic papers and pick "suitable reviewers" for warmist ones, in order to make life difficult for those who might question the global warming hypothesis.
McGregor made a brief appearance in the New Zealand Herald over the weekend, where he is quoted in an article about Kiwis' lack of confidence in global warming science:
Dr McGregor said if climatologists explained their research processes better, they might be able to avoid popular criticisms, such as recent accusations of scientists "fiddling" with climate records.
"When people don't understand the process they just pick up on, 'oh they've adjusted the (climate) record'," he said. "That probably creates a lot of mistrust."
Professor McGregor has been caught red-handed and nobody is going to be fooled by an argument that they are too stupid to understand.
When in a hole, one is normally best advised to stop digging.

The disbelievers include many simpletons who are baffled by the whole thing - but the faithful percentage are all highly-intelligent experts who have spent a long time researching their own conclusions. :-)
As editor of IJoC, McGregor had ample opportunity to ensure that "climatologists explained their research processes better". But he was more concerned with ensuring that the warmist message got out and the coolist message was suppressed. Pot calling kettle black methinks.
The emails now mean that far more people understand the process. Criminal deception has been revealed.

What I am picking up on is how Glenn McGregor subverted the peer review process and stacked review panels. I am also picking up on the fact that he has not been relieved of his position following this revelation. There would not be many professions that would allow conduct such as that without censure. Then again from the information revealed in climategate emails and other sources it looks like science has ceased to be a profession and is more closely related to political activism. Science will be the loser for enabling disgraceful behaviour like this to go uncensured. I think Glenn's big problem is that more people are actually understanding the process and that is to his ultimate detriment.

A number of people contributing to this blog have advanced degrees and have been involved in the "scientific method", "peer review" and the like. However, you are absolutely right about the majority of punters out there getting a serious education as well. This is a good thing.
Yes, the mystic they had tried to wrap around their fraud is unraveliing and you have pointed ot one of the most important --- the Science is not settled, and sciene, in general, is very upset with these clowns.
The more we get exposed to alarmist climate scientists, the more appalled I am at the inadequacy of their logic skills. The science is sloppy and the reasoning revealed in their arguments is often flawed. I just don't think these guys are very bright.
Perhaps a lot of them got involved in an academic backwater when they were in school and years later have been thrust into the global spotlight by the political theater. This may explain a lot of why they are so reticent to release data, methods, or code. It's just not up to standards.
I say we should give him a few more shovels . . . the more he digs the bigger the implosion of his religious belief structure.
There is a novel called the "Caine Mutiny".
It became a film of the same name.
The plot revolves around an allegation of mutiny by certain officers against the Captain during a storm.
The key to the defense was to get the Captain to speak freely about what happened and why.

I encourage skeptics to do all they can to get AGW promoters to speak freely and at length.

I am appalled that these people got advanced degrees from what I thought were reputable Universities and even more appalled that they are now teaching there.
They aren't even third rate. We really need to clean up our universities and take out the trash.
When somebody tells me that "The Science (note captialization) is Settled", I know they don't have the foggest idea what they are talking about. Your points are well made.
As for Al "I invented the internet" Gore, I was in the audience in early 1999 when Al Gore made that claim in public in Silly Con Valley. We were all so stunned nobody objected. It is interesting today that he has distanced himself from that specious claim. Now we see Al "Inconvenient Truth" Gore disappear down the rat hole with his AGW buddies.
And this man wanted to be President of the United States?
As Jan Stewart quipped on his show back in early December:
“Poor Al Gore. Global warming completely debunked via the very Internet you invented. Oh, oh, the irony!”

The vanity and arrogance of these failed discipline scientists beggars belief. What were "Climate Scientists", "Climatologists" researching before the AGW hypothesis blessed them with the X-Factor and limitless budgets, I wonder. Where will they go if the funding stops, they must wonder.
This is I'm afraid a very typical example of spin from the NZ Herald, a newspaper without any competition. Not altogether a lost cause, as they do carry a fortnightly article by satirist sceptic Jim Hopkins, aka Jam Hipkins...

@Hunter: With all due respect, but I think you may have it round the wrong way, at least as far as the film was concerned (starring Humphrey Bogart). His officers began to think that he (the Captain) was mentally unstable, possibly insane, and relieved him of command. Back onshore, they were tried for mutiny against him.
Whether he was in fact insane was a bit of an open question I seem to remember, and I also seem to remember that he was technically exonerated and they were found guilty (but I might have misremembered that bit).
The Caine Mutiny
The Caine Mutiny question.
At the trial the defense counsel for the Executive Officer and others who removed Captain Qweeg gets the Captain to crack on the stand. (The defense counsel is played by Jose Ferrar in the movie.) The officers are let off in the embarrassing courtroom scene where Qweeg cracks.
In the end the defense counsel berates the officers for not helping the Captain, but instead contributing to his going insane by their actions leading up to the "mutiny." The "mutiny" would have been unnecessary had they taken the time to understand and help their commander. He points out that the Captain was a highly decorated combat veteran who was serving while they were still sitting safe at home. As he walks away from them he expresses his complete contempt and disgust for their actions saying words to the effect that he needs a stiff drink and bath to wash away the stench of defending them. They are left bewildered and shamed as he walks away.
Anyway great movie and well worth seeing. Bogey is masterful as Qweeg and Ferrar is outstanding as the defense counsel.
